Hi chaps, my wife was cooking dinner tonight in the main oven and there was a pop which tripped the RCD in the fuse box. After the oven cooled down, I flicked the RCD back on again and turned the oven back on again and it popped immediately, tripping the RCD once again. It was a pretty loud bang and there was quite a spark – I won’t be trying it again! I’ll take the element out to inspect it a little later (power off) but when the element has gone before I am usually able to turn the oven on and just have the fan blowing cold air around, which I wasn’t able to do this time.

A couple of hours later and I’ve just taken the element out. It looks fine (no blistering or burns, etc). However the rear cover has a burn on it at the top and the oven housing has a corresponding burn on it. I guess for some reason a spark is travelling between the 2?

From my description, could it still be the element, or have you any suggestions as to what else it might be and how I might test for that?

    Thanks, in advance.

Switched on again without element in and didn’t trip RCD and fan runs. I’m guessing it’s time for another new element – the 4th in 18 months! This time I will go for the genuine Bosch one at £32 and have just submitted my order on ukwg (104545).

Should I be looking at what is causing the elements to go, or should I expect to get through this many? Could there be a problem with the 3 copy parts that I’ve received from you in the past?

    Thanks

Wow, that’s quick delivery, the new element has arrived in a tad under 24hrs!

Check fan is turning o.k & not noisy or slowing down. Excess grease on shaft & bearings can cause them to slow down & elements go pop. Elements have been known to go pop on these for no obvious reason.

The new element is in and operational. Fan is quiet and appears to be running freely. Hopefully the ‘genuine’ element will last a little longer than the others I’ve used.

This is spooky – I came on here to post almost the same question. Yesterday my Bosch oven (not sure of the model but I’ll check when I get home tonight) did much the same but without the loud pop. It was about 2 hrs into a 2 hour, 10 munite roast when it popped the main kitchen RCD.

Switching the oven off allowed the breaker to be reset, and then (because I assumed it was a temporary overload due to using the microwave, kettle and a few other current-hogs at the same time) I turned it back on. I ran fine for another few minutes and then the breaker tripped again. Switched the oven off and reset the breaker, but this time as soon as I turned the oven back on the breaker tripped. Fortunately there was enough hat in the oven to finish the roast (let’s get priorities right here!).

    Observations:
The oven would power-up normally when the breaker was reset, and the clock and cabinet cooling fan ran normally. I suspect that the breaker was tripped when the thermostat switched the heater elements on.

From the previous post I gather that these symptoms could indicate a failed heater element – is there any way to tell which one? (the oven was in “fan cook” mode at the time, but I don’t know which element this uses).

Could these symptoms come from any other failure such as the main oven internal fan? Is there any way to isolate the fault using simple equipment? I have DVMs and even a cope of oscilloscopes, but no HV insulation tester to hand – would trying different combinations of settings (upper and lower elements etc) be helpful in diagnosing anything?

If it is the element how easy are they to change? Does it need any special tools, and would it need anything else to be changed at the same time (gaskets, seals etc)?

    Thanks in advance,

PDR , posting the full ENR number first will be advantageous as there are different heaters depending on models .

It should be on a badge on or around the main oven door/cavity.

Just got home to check – it says “E Nr hbn43m550b”. Is that the number you need?
