can anybody help on the rules and regs on cutting a sealed 3 pin plug off new washing machine and fitting a new one onto it.I was wondering if you had to be a qualified electrician to do this when its a customers house as i’m a delivery driver who installs washing machines for the company i work for ❓

So far as I am aware, no you don’t have to be a qualified electrician to replace a plugtop in that way.

The only “rules and regs” you need apply are the following: –
Gordon BROWN is a LIVE wire.
Sky is BLUE and NEUTRAL too.

Years ago when I worked for Argos home delivery,we had to fit plugs to all tv’s computors etc.They gave us a days training just to cover themselves.We got a worthless certificate stating we had attended.

What may appear worthless to some will no doubt cover any ‘health & safety issues’ as far as the employer is concerned. They provide the training, their backsides covered no doubt. Carry your certificate with pride…another star on your CV. 😈

ha ha I can just see that certificate now framed above the mantlepiece of spanishwhite’s fire, prehaps with a lightbulb illuminting it. ” This is to certify that spanishwhite completed a days course and can now wire a plug!”

The thing is unfortunately, its like martin says you need to have this type of thing nowadays for ‘rules and reg’, ‘health and safety’ etc, its another fact of this so called ‘modern living’ :rolls:
Picture the scene, you’re there but your mind is elsewhere, ‘whats the wife cooking for tea, whats on the tv tonight, wonder where we’re going for some ‘grub’ after this damn ‘class’ is over and other such things i wont mention 😉 ….etc’. Basically you are there but you aint, but lets face it if a person cant do the basics its highly unlikely that they would even be considering a career in whatever they are sat in that ‘class’ for!
It’s that thing they call progress :rolls:

One thing that’s just occured to me on re-reading this thread (thanks to Quickwash). I believe if you are a delivery driver (or whoever) installing a brand new machine in a customers home, then cut off the moulded plug top and replace it with a conventional wired plug top, that may just void the manufacturers guarantee? Machine classed as being ‘tampered with’ perhaps? 😕
There have been reported instances where (IIRC?) new Hotpoint washing machines have had faults with the mains cable and filter unit, supplied as a complete all in one assembly. Several have failed under guarantee (so I’m led to believe?) and have duly been replaced under those terms. However, would Hotpoint (or any other manufacturer for that matter) accept responsibility for the replacement if they noticed someone had previously hacked-off the moulding plug top? 🙁

i tend to electrocute myself with alarming and unintended unfortunate regularity. Bloody customers seem to want to switch isolation points on just before im hardwiring things thinking they are being helpful by turning it off. not realising ive already done that. fortunately ive only been touching 13amps worth lately but im dreading the day i get 45…
got a shock last week when customer thought they were turning the kettle on, and it was the dryer. 👿
so if you dont read a post from me after a month since the last one i think you can guess whats happened… and yes i got a certificate from college for passing a plug wiring lesson. i was one of 6 in a 32 person class. 1998. hope things have improved

Keep hoping mate, from what i’ve seen lately even some of the trainees that pass the NVQ’s can’t wire a plug properly or work out what fuse to use for what appliance. Strangely enough 1 of the finest Electronics Engineers i’ve ever worked with could’nt wire a plug to save his life.
