ParticipantGot my usual statement from Masterpart early in the month so rang up and paid my account (and release it as it was on hold) over the phone. Order came through next day. Sorted…..I thought.
A few days later I get a letter about the overdue account with the usual little note apologising if the payment had crossed in the post. Duly binned.
Today I get a letter threatening court action if the account is not paid.
Checked my card statement and no payment had been taken. Obviously the card details have not been passed on.
I contacted them regarding this as by now I’m getting a bit peeved and really haven’t got time to chase up other peoples cock ups.
The new system which is like a chocolate fireguard compared to the old one, means that they can no longer log card details anymore due to the data protection act, but they can pass around little slips of paper (or not as the case may be) with all my card details on.
Spoke to the person who took the call and they couldn’t remember the call or the whereabouts of my card slip. She even asked me if I wanted to give my card details again………..guess my answer.TC

To be fair Tony, if you store card details in any way at all the hoops you have to jump through to meet the DP and card scheme requirements are just insane. You have to do this, that, vet staff, store in fireproof safes, be audited by a company that you have pay thousands a year to and all sorts of stuff and it’s just not worth the cost or aggravation.
And if you get caught storing details when you shouldn’t… big, BIG, BIG fines are coming at you.
So I can see why that policy is now in place and understand the reasons behind it.
I also know how much it hacks people off when you tell them that you can’t change a payment or call up payment details as you don’t have access to do it. But it is sadly the case that most companies now can either take a payment or refund a payment and that’s about it really.
The rest of it, I can’t speak to as I’ve only had the very odd issue with MP accounts and it’s usually sorted out pretty swiftly whenever there is one.

I take telephone payments all the time, why cant they just punch the details into the PDQ machine and then its done. I pay lot of suppliers this way too, the data protection act is covered then as its with the PDQ terminal issueing bank.

Yeah and that’s totally fine as you’re not storing the card details for future payments etc. It’s when you store the details it all goes pear shaped on you.
It’s an anti-fraud thing as the reasoning goes that, if someone breaks in and gets those details, a disaffected staff member sells them or whatever then the card company can hold you liable for any losses they suffer. That would include recovery costs and all manner of charges and, we all know what bank charges are like. :rolls:
My advice, don’t store any card details at all, anywhere unless it’s your own card.

Gor blimey guv but this is really off-topic somewhat to TC’s problem and no mistake. 8)
In fact there’s not much need to over-hype when it comes to dealing with customers paying on-line or over the phone giving their full credit/debit cards details. There’s too much of it going on these days anyway for it to go any way near pear shaped toward the trader. As long that is….they register their compliance under the PCI DSS Merchant Compliance Declaration. Costs about a tenner to register using the likes of this company: –

Anyway, I’m sure TC doesn’t need to worry over that issue right now.

It’s sorta is a bit OT but sorta not.
What I was trying to explain was that MP probably can’t actually store the card details and be compliant with the card scheme and that’s why they couldn’t recover TC’s card details to make a payment.
In days of yore it was a thing you could do, but not now. So the new system that’s been installed probably simply reflects that change in the way of things.
You are absolutely correct Martin, it is that you have to be PCI DSS Merchant compliant and, if you store any payment details at all it’s a total nightmare for a small or medium sized business to comply with. As well as very costly IIRC. I do know that the “fines” for breach were positively frightening.

TBH card details being stored wasn’t my worry, it’s the fact that someone took all my card details and nobody knows who it is 😥
Sorted now I put the £350 in a large envelpoe and posted it. Should be safe that way
