Had a call Saturday morning just as I’m rushing out the house – left the call to go to answer message or I was going to be late for footy.

I called the customer back three hours later – and grumpy old man says if I can’t make it out that afternoon not to bother. They need their washing done desperately! He’s got some one else coming Monday morning – ah well.

Sunday – Call from GOM on my message service to call him Urgently.
Monday – 8.05 GOM on the phone… blah blah I didn’t instantly return his call on Sunday morning….blah blah. Could I come NOW and do the job for him?

What happened to the other engineer?? I enquired.
    Oh he’s a wan***er. (charming…)

Can you do it? Start talking through the job – gave him a price (I know my price is approximately the same as others around here)

HOW MUCH ?? followed by I only want the machine repairing not replacing. I’m a pensioner, you’re all charging too much. I was only expecting a tenner – fifteen at a push. Offered my price again and gave him options for calls and left it at that.

He called back later when I was out – politely asking if I could call Tuesday PM.

I will be asking for payment upfront!!!

I had a call at 10pm this Sunday night – Amica I sold with guarantee fault.

“Sorry, you need to call Amica.”
“But they’re closed and I’d like it fixed this evening, I have washing I need done for tomorrow morning.”

Ironically the customer’s name was Ms. Payne… and she was a pain ;).

The guy turned out to be ok and quite pleasant face to face. Turns out he used to be an engineer in the RAF but couldn’t understand why his Hoover WM door wouldn’t stay on. (classic Hoover door hinge fault) He wasn’t really there bless him, a bit of Alzheimer’s coupled with a hugh “drunks” nose.

After the job I enquired what happened to the other guy?? The GOM wouldn’t really elaborate other than he saying didn’t get back to me again quick enough on Saturday evening.

To cut a long story short – Saturday was their day for washing and they couldn’t live with breaking their routine. These incredibly busy pensioners eh…!! Bless em 😀

    Re: Impatient customer

If people are unreasonable it is usually best to refuse the job. If everyone they ring does the same they might eventually start being a bit more respectful. I had a bloke banging on my door at 7.30 yesterday morning demanding to know what’s happening about his oven. This is in a house that is about to be rented out and the new tenant has noticed the oven door won’t stay fully shut. I told him I’ve not yet been able to find a source of new hinges for the Academy brand oven. He was then wanting me to go out looking for a new oven that would fit. I was polite enough but I sent him on his way. I won’t get paid for the job but that’s no big deal.

I always ignore the phone before 8am as I want a bit of peace and quiet with a cup of tea – but this morning I had TWELVE missed calls from four different people!

    Re: Impatient customer

Early morning/late calls be a pain. They are getting fewer and fewer as we’ve both encouraged our customers to use mobile number (seperate work phones – we’re both self employed). It has made a noticeable difference but a lot of people still prefer a landline number for various reasons. If we do get early/late calls, unless we recognise the number we tend to ignore it. If, for what ever reason we take a late call and I consider the time to be too late I will now tell them it’s too late. If you would like to call back at a more sociable time etc etc… I used to be bothered about it but I’m just getting thicker skinned. I’m becoming a grumpy old man… 😀

Are’nt we all in this trade mate? Think it’s a side effect from years of dealing with the punters. 😆

    Re: Impatient customer

My phone has a switch on the side to switch the ringer off. I switch it off before going to bed and don’t switch it on until I’ve done with breakfast. I have a little card which says “ringer off” so I can see in case I forget to switch it on. Caller ID thingy broke about a month ago, so I don’t risk picking it up much now at all. 60-70{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} leave a message anyway and those that don’t usually call again within a couple of days. Reluctance to leave a message is the first sign that they’re the new punter / suspicious types. 😆

    Re: Impatient customer

I never answer the phone out of working hours and the ringer is always off over the weekend. I had a call the other day from a man who’s machine door would not open. he called at 9.30 I told him we could call at around 11.00 He said have you not got anything sooner, it’s very urgent! 😯 When I got there it was an old man who was house bound, so why the rush? He told me he only does a wash every other week.
