❓ My Hotpoint Washer dryer has given up the ghost after 14 years service albeit relatively light use 2xweekly washes. Now looking to replace it with a washer only, ideally with 6kg load, Energy efficient, wool, hand wash/delicates option. small/half load options and importantly one that is going to Last!!!

I’m in split mind whether to pay more money up front for a miele or siemens with a 10 yr guarentee. which costs more but might work out cheaper over the life of the machine.

……. Or go mid upper range eg for a BoschWFR3268 or AEG L86800
with only 2/1 years guarentee l

or go for cheap model & risk it.

I’ve been particularly concerned by many retailers telling me that Washing machines don’t last anything like they used to, & to expect no more than 5 years use at most from them, in which case the 10 year guarentee machines becomes a more sensible choice

Also is there any real difference between a 1600 & 1400 spin apart from more wear & tear on the bearings!

    Any advice greatfully received

    Rick,

It is a consumer minefield out there. Word of advice firstly, never ask a salesman which machine to buy 😉

You only get what you pay for these days, the makes and models you quote are fine, I agree on that. Miele are quite simply THE BEST, Bosch come second.

A spin speed no more than 1200 rpm is favorite, Faster spins means rapid wear and are a total gimmick anyway. (3 bath towels will take 5 minutes longer to tumble dry between in a 1200 than a 1600rpm – that’s all!)

Washer/Dryers are to be avoided though. Buy seperate machines, much more efficient and your washing can be done in half the time to boot! These modern gadgets take hours to complete a wash/spin/dry cycle 🙁

Any machine with a 10 year guarantee gets my vote 😉

    Hope that helps?

    Rick,

First things first – Bosch and Siemens are the same machine, the only difference is that Siemens have differently styled controlled panels.

Anyways, I would heavily recommend an AEG. I own both recent AEG and Bosch washing machines, and my AEG (model 86741) is far better both as features, build quality, and quietness is concerned than the Bosch (model WFO2864). Granted – my Bosch was £350 versus my £600 AEG, but still – I’ve looked online and you can get a decent, 1600rpm AEG starting at about £420 (model 76800).

Miele are the best, but to be honest for a similarly well built machine, and with more features for a similar price – I would recommend AEG – they are more or less up there with the Miele. I feel that the quality of Bosch on the “Maxx” style laundry range has detioriated, they don’t feel substantial enough for my liking…

BTW, my AEG and Bosch are both high spinning machines (AEG 1600rpm, and Bosch 1400rpm), and I find that 1600rpm really works better for things like bedlinen and towels, even over 1400 – but as a standard I spin most clothes at 1200rpm anyway as I’m not convinced of spinning them that fast – so if you wash towels/bedlinen frequently, then I would recommend the higehr (1400rpm+ spinspeeds), but even so a 1200rpm machine should suffice. BTW, the spin profile (i.e. amount of time the machine spins and how it speeds up) also depends on the spin speed – my AEG spins longer at max speed than my Bosch does, and I have a feeling that makes the difference rather than the higher speed. I also remember a few years ago Hotpoints only spun at max speed for a few seconds, whilst other brands spun for longer at the same speed, and got more water out. But yeah, anyway, 1400-1600rpm is more than enough for spin speed.

From what I’ve read and also from experience, I would rank the brands in order of both quality and life, as Miele, AEG, then Bosch/Siemens.

    Hope this helps,

    Jon

    Hi Jon,

Except that AEG are actually owned by the Electrolux Group and you are in fact buying a machine often that is the same as a Zanussi, Electrolux or even a plain old Tricity Bendix with, like the bosch/Neff/Siemens a different facsia on it! The only brand that I know of that you can guarantee getting and will be well engineered and produced in Germany is Miele all the others produce appliances in other regions and are, generally, not as well engineered.

    K.
