Hotpoint WDD960G started squeeling today on spin cycle. Did a couple of rinses/spins and it it still doing it.

Cannot be heard at all during wash cycle, but gets louder as the spin gets faster. As spin slows and stos there is a loud squeel/squeak just as it stops – no noise as it starts from stop though.

Machine is only 3 months old (replaced for free by Domestic and General after previous Hotpoint machine almost killed me).

Could it be something as simple as the belt? And this early?

3 months old, get it seen to ASAP.

The belt is very unlikely to be the cause and would tend to make more noise on a wash anyway.

    What could it be?

I have booked a repair visit so will see. Hope it doesn’t go the same way as my last one which had something wrong every other week almost.

Last one died finally following a bearing replacement that resulted in serious electrical fault that could have killed me. I DO NOT want a repair on something like that again.

With the exception of the very expensive Miele machines all washer/dryers are trouble.

The problem with yours is that although it says Hotpoint on the front it is in fact an Indesit machine, very much a bottom end product.

Could be a foreign body inside the drum, bra wire etc, or a very dry main bearing seal.

If the model is actually a WDD950GUK.C or UK.CA or the industrial code has 64655 in it then your machine has the awful sealed drum. :rolls:

After the debacle with my last machine I swore I would never buy Hotpoint again as long as I lived. The warranty company replaced it for free and insisted it was like for like so I had to have Hotpoint.

It is a WDD960G but without pulling it out of it’s cubby hole I can’t check any other info on the model number.

This started overnight (so to speak). One wash it was normal, next one it was squeeling and now does it all the time on spin. Just put a clean cycle 90C wash on with nothing in to flush the mahine out in case it’s a foreign object.

Tried spinning the drum by hand which sounds fine.

Ou of interest, what is the consequence of a poorly sealed drum?

Its not a poorly sealed drum, it is a completely sealed outer drum, cheap to produce, only possible repair is complete change.

Model numbers are on a small label inside the door surround.

    Still squeeling!

No rattling or odd noises so don’t think it’s a foreign object. Odd that it started overnight as I would think a dodgy bearing would get slowly worse. Whe. The bearings failed in my last machine it was a grating rough noise rather than a squeel and took months to develop into anything.

It has a sealed drum so if it is the bearing seal then it will need a complete drum to cure.

Let us know what transpires. 😉

Got them coming in a week so will report back then. Am I within my rights to demand a new machine rather than a drum replacement after only 3 months if that is indeed the problem?

I don’t trust their engineers after the work on my last machine and wouldn’t trust the machine after a major strip down.

I know there are good and bad engineers but I certainly seem to have ben sent the bad ones every time!

Sorry to hijack this, but our Hoover WDYNS654D is also making a squealing noise at the start of the cycle – it usually fades out as the cycle progresses.

While I don’t think there is anything stuck in the space between the drum and tub, is there a way to remove a paddle to have a better look?

Although both are low end Italian appliances badged as well known British brands, they are totally different machines, it would be better to start a thread specifically for your own machine danielnez1.

both probably need door seals… its well documented on the hoover rubbish

Interesting you should say door seal as I thought the squeel as it slowed was comig from the front. How would door seal cause the squeel though?

The back of the seal rubs against the inner drum as it turns.

Done another load of washing today so stood and listened to it.

Noise starts I would say at about 800rpm and gets louder to full speed 1600rpm. On slowing down noise is evident until maybe around 200rpm.

Doesn’t seem as loud today though as it did yesterday and still silent during washing. Not tried drying yet.
