I have an electrolux ERN 34800 fridge (out of warranty) that I think has a temperature sensor fault. If I may explain:

The fridge has a digital display to show the currrent temperature and allow you to set the desired temperature. A few days ago this stopped showing the temperature and started showing 0. The 0 is shown using the top four lines of an 7 segment display rather than the outer 6 segments i.e. it is not zero but the top half of an 8! If I adjust the desired temperature the 7 segment display works perfectly so I do not believe that this is a fault with the display but an error message. I have found my user manual (!!!) and read it from cover to cover but it does not mention this error message. I tried the electrolux www site and this suggested that it might be a temperature sensor issue but I am not entirely clear.

I have tried turning the fridge off at the wall, waited a few seconds, then turned it back on but no change.

The fridge is still working in that it runs some times and not others and the temperature in the fridge seems OK to me though over the last few months the fridge had been getting iced inside and I found I had to turn the desired temperature up from 5C to more like 8C to stop it freezing. Perhaps with hindsight this was the thermostatic control starting to fail.

Should I be worried and get the fridge fixed or just check that the temperature is OK in the fridge and save myself the trouble?

IF I should get it fixed, perhaps a stupid question given where I am posting but should I go to electrolux or repairs@ for assistance and why?

Your help would be much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Will

Sensor has failed or connections to board are not good.

    Thanks for the confirmation Seamy.

How easy a job is it to get at the sensor? I guess if I could get access to the sensor connection to the control board I could clean the contacts and re-seat the connector and see if that fixes it.

Seamy, yes, I absolutely agree. No.1 rule of working with electricity, don’t, isolate first.

I appreciate anybody can access this forum and also that anybody could say, for example, that they were a chartered electronics engineer who also happened to have C&G in IEE wiring regs. In my case it is true but whatever:

My problem is I can’t see how to get into the fridge nor where the sensor might be. Any experience getting into this model?

Control p.c.b is located behind the control panel at the top of appliance, tighten the connections to the edge of the p.c.b, this sometimes is all thats needed to cure it.
Some of the sensors are foamed into the walls of the appliance & are not changeable, (think this may be the case with yours) in this case the appliance defaults to factory settings & will continue to operate.
PNC or product code (9 digit num’) needed to confirm if sensors are changeable or not.

Seamy, thanks for the assistance, much apprecaited! I would love to know if the sensor can be replaced:

    Product number is 923 800 734.

Do I just gently lever off the control panel to get at the control PCB or is there another way in? I have a history of breaking things trying to get in to them to fix them, so little is designed for repair these days! I infamously took a hammer to an ansaphone after failing to open the welded plastic case, my wife’s favourite story many years after the event 😆

No evaporator sensor is listed as a replacement part, the appliance will default to factory settings if its faulty & use air sensor only.

You should be able to remove the fascia plastic cover carefully from front, think there are screws behind it to allow access to p.c.d.

Nope, gave up trying. It seems to work OK (though I would guess less efficiently) without the temperature sensor. I need to adjust the temperature setting on the dial to get the fridge to maintain a sensible internal temperature between summer and winter but otherwise it regulates OK.
