I’ve been looking for a hob downdraft ventilator that can be used with gas hobs – and if possible with a wok burner. I’ve only found Wolf and Gaggenau units that are good for gas, but none for wok burners except units made for the US market. Any ideas?

    Hi Raffy,

There are a few around but they’re mostly targetted at the barbeque domino hobs and really always have been for the UK/EU so I think you may struggle in all honesty.

Is there a reason why you want to extract from a normal hob using one of these? I ask because you’re looking at serious cash from Wolf or Gaggenau I presume simply because of the distance that it has to draw air down and I doubt they’d be quiet either as it would require a fairly chunky motor to get the draw.

I’m actually looking for UK/EU compliant models (for a domino hob range) but can only find US downdraft models for use with gas. The reason for a downdraft rather than hood is ‘cos it’s for an open plan space and the building design makes installing any kind of extracting hood a bit of a chore, while a recirculating hood wouldn’t provide a great enough extraction rate for the space.
From what I know of downdraft extractors most of them allow you to fit the motor remotely so that they are actually quieter than standard hoods so that’s another reason for looking at these.
As for the cash factor – I’m currently re-building the house so I don’t have much – that’s why I’m asking for help!

TBH Raffy it’s been some years since I last looked at these and we rarely come across them. When I was looking at them they were only being advised for use with the BBQ and nothing else by Gagganau if memory serves me. I have not seen a UK one for some time and a lot of people don’t even know about the BBQ domino’s let alone the additional extraction required to use them as it is a pretty specialist area.

I really think you’re going to struggle to achieve what you want here without going to specialist and, therefore, expensive equipment.

Wolf don’t, to my knowledge, actually sell in the UK or EU at all yet on an official level so sales and service may be a chore to get, spares would just be a nightmare.

Gaggenau are probably your best option in all honesty but whether they have system powerful enough for what I think you want to do is doubtful as they were, from what I know of them, always used to compliment an overhead extractor, not be a primary extractor.

However, I see that they now seem to be saying that the current range can be used as a primary extraction method. Of course this would probably mean using a Gaggenau hob/s as well, which will not be cheap!

I couldn’t see any prices, no shock it’s a case of if you have to ask you can’t afford it I guess, on any of the machines in the UK but US, $1300…each…OUCH! And that was discounted!

Re: Downdraft ventilation – Brit models?

    Hi,

I came across this forum query after doing a web search for downdraft ventilation systems.

I’d like to know if you have an update to the reply posted in 2004 as I’m currently planning a new kitchen and it would suit one of these type of ventilation units. We’re hoping to have an induction hob in an island under a vaulted ceiling and therefore a chimney type island hood would really spoil the look (and be messy to fit). I’ve seen a Wolf downdraft extractor in the kitchen design magazines but am struggling to find any info about them in general.

Are there any other manufacturers selling countertop extraction units in the UK now (am happy to pay up to £1000 if necessary) and if so who would you recommend and are there any key problems with installation that we should be aware of?

    Any advice appreciated, thanks
