ParticipantI got a leaflet from my bank to inform me that the scheme will end on June 30th 2011.
I accept a lot of cheques and have had very few problems ,however without a guarantee card system I don’t want to take the risk.
So how do you guys do it and which card payment providers would suit a low volume trader such as myself?

PAYPAL …
you can send customer an email with invoice – they then log into pay-pal via link in email and pay …
we use a lot when dealing with landlords etc .. you can also have a virtual terminal via pay pal , basicaly you log in to your paypal account where you have the facility to take card details etc ..

Steve, I hate to tell you this but cheque guarantee cards went AWOL way back in October 2009. And many banks since that time have refused to honour even the established £75 ceiling. So golden rule since has always been…IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO LOSE IT THEN DONT USE IT…..!!! 😉

September 2009 was when they announced that the scheme was to end on June 30th 2011.
At least if a customer produces a guarantee card with £100 limit on it then they have some standing with their bank and you can compare the signatures.
As I said I have had very few problems as I do check cards and cheques carefully.
Anyway I wont be taking many cheques after June 30th which is why I posted the question about card payment systems.
Cash is of course always acceptable and without a guarantee card scheme I can insist on cash payment without sounding a bit dodgy. 😉

I never bothered taking card details anyway with cheques and never had a bouncy one in 14 years of trading. This move does represent the beginning of the end for cheques though and is one of the reasons I’m leaving the trade.
