ParticipantHello, I am stuck and would really appreciate some help.
I fitted a new pump but it seems dead – no humming or whirring. I think it is getting power because my tester screwdriver lights up …
I’m stumped. Before you ask, I have checked for blockages in the pipes, cleaned the filter, checked the ping pong ball thingy is free, siphoned out all the water twice through the drain hose.
The machine runs normally right up to the point when it ought to be draining out.
I would be really grateful if anyone knows an answer.

Sorry but a neon tester screwdriver is totally useless for proper testing of electrical appliances and in fact could be quite dangerous.
There is absolutely no need to live test under any circumstances.
Why did you need to fit a new pump in the first place? did you test the old one with a megger or suitable multimeter beforehand?

Thanks for replying. I fitted a new pump after I cleaned the filter and checked the pipes were not blocked and was certain the old pump was not running. I thought I’d been pretty thorough!
Can you tell me what to try next? All the DIY guides I’ve read say it will be either a blockage or a faulty pump 99.9 per cent of the time.

So because the old pump was not running you changed it for a new one without actually testing it electrically?
The fact that you still have the exact same fault suggests the old pump was OK and the original fault is still there. Possibly a wiring fault or although unlikely a PCB fault.
There is a large amount of mis information out there, any electrical component can be tested before it is replaced if you have the correct test equipment and know how to use it.
If you do not have either of those prerequisites then you should not be attempting to repair electrical appliances, and certainly not sticking a neon tester screwdriver into one. 😥

Thanks for your advice. I’m sure your are right that it is a wiring problem. I’ll try testing the wires for resistance ( with the power off) and if that doesn’t locate the problem, I’ll give up.
Many thanks.February 13, 2011 at 8:39 pm #344508Specialist01269

Also check the connectors where the wires attach to the control PCB, they can often go faulty. Pay careful attention to the wiring where it is attached to chassis points for breakage, as Iadom has said Neon mainstesters can be dangerous to use & should be avoided.

Testing for continuity would be a better idea. 😉
