    Hi everyone!

I have a Zanussi DE6744 which I’ve had for about 18 months. It’s 3rd hand and a little beaten up but up to now it’s worked well.

Recently it stopped working early in a wash cycle, I presume during the pre-wash as it hadn’t released the detergent. The bottom of the cabinet was full of water to just below the level at which opening the door would have flooded my kitchen (well done Zanussi for only using just the right amount of water!).

I removed the dishes and the bottom tray, bailed out the water into a bucket, pulled the unit out of it’s home under my sink and inspected the outlet hose. The outlet hose was fairly gunked with greasy nastiness, so I dismantled the trap which the outlet hose emptys into and cleaned it. I got a lot of gunk out of there, and thought this may have been the problem.

I put the washer back in position, fired her up and ran a “quick” cycle with detergent but no dishes. This completed correctly and I thought “victory!”. Well my victory lasted about 4 washes, on Saturday it did the same thing again. I’ve checked and the outlet hose is clear, having pulled the machine out and fiddled with everything it’s now draining properly again but I don’t feel I’ve really done anything so it’s likely to happen again.

I suspect that there is a partial blockage/general state of gunkyness inside the machine somewhere, but it’s not obvious to me where that would be. Does anyone have any suggestions beyond running some dishwasher cleaner through it? I’m not a trained engineer but I am comfortable wielding a screwdriver, I just don’t know what to unscrew!

    many thanks in advance

Hi: It’s possible that the pump which feeds your outlet hose is also gunked up inside, have you cleaned out the internal sump in your machine? You should find a small removable grille in the base of your machine, if you remove this there is a small sump underneath that can get clogged up with fatty gunk.

PLEASE REMEMBER POWER OFF & PLUG OUT FIRST.

Hi Specialist, thanks for the reply.

I’ve had both the coarse and fine filters out (the latter is a large round plate arangement in the bottom of the machine which rotates slightly and lifts out. It is mostly a metal grill, with a fine mesh screen in the centre). There is what I might describe as a sump under these, which seems to be clear. Is that what you are refering to or is there a further panel to remove?

I tried firing the machine up with some dishwasher cleaner in it this morning and it now wont fill, which is a new error. I’ve checked the fill hose and it’s not kinked and the feed valve is turned on. (edit: on re-reading I should clarify that I haven’t actually managed to use the dishwasher cleaner, as the machine refused to fill when I tried to run a cycle with the cleaner in place)

The machine starts up, pumps itself out (which is always the first thing it does on starting), then tries to fill but instead just makes slightly unhappy laboured motor noises for a little while and stops.

I’ve heard there is part of the filling mechanism of these Zanussi machines which can become clogged, could that be the case here do you think?

Hi: At this point it might be worth thinking of getting a good independent local repairer to look at it & give you a repair estimate.
You could try a look at the UKWG repairs@ feature to see if we list a repairer in your area.
