ParticipantI’m trying to replace the heater on a Hotpoint WF740T.
1. I’ve loosened the nut and it moves about 5mm easily – I know the rubber swells, does it just need pulling hard?
2. Taken out a paddle to look from the drum and the existing heater seems to be slightly different – the replacement has a plate over it. I assume the plate is to stop the washing going in the heater if/when a paddle comes off. There’s metal plate fixed to the bottom of the drum under the heater with a narrow rising bracket that hold the central element – looks like it will foul the plate on the new heater?
3. Only trying to replace it as a last attempt to fix an F08 error – already have a replacement module and pressure switch. The heater has good continuity, resistance (29 Ohms) and insulation (>2000 MOhms) so I don’t really know what can be wrong with it.
Thanks for any help.

What module did you buy? If I remember correctly (IF i’m wrong i’m sure 1 of my colleagues will let me know) F08 refers to a stuck heater relay which energises the heater with no water in the tub.

Thanks – I’ve understood that F08 is the heater not being detected as off when it should be, so either a stuck heater relay, stuck pressure switch or some heater fault that upsets the detection. I wondered if it might be via the overload thermostat. (I’ve just thought, I guess I can swap that for the one in the new heater).
I bought a refurb module from EMW – Tony assures me he fits new heater relays on all his refurb boards, so I had eliminated that. (The original fault symptom was all console lights flashing intermittently.)

There would appear to be nothing wrong with your heater and F08 is not caused by a faulty heater.
Overload thermostat???????
There isn’t one, the heating element contains one or possibly two microtemps that go O/C if the heater comes on without water but if these fail the heater registers as open circuit. The small probe sticking out of the back of the heater plate is the NTC which controls the temperatures.
TBH, I stopped doing any F08 faults on this Indesit rubbish ages ago. Its just not worth the aggravation and has left me out of pocket more than 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time when I have tried to solve it.
All console lights flashing is a capacitor fault BTW.
The plate on the heater is designed to slot under a moulded ridge on the outer drum to keep the heater from flapping up and hitting the inner drum. It is fixed to the heater and comes out with it unless it has been damaged by coins or similar.
There is only one satisfactory way to repair an F08, take one trebuchet……… 😉

Thanks, iadom. The overload thermostat was semi-educated speculation on my part so I’ll forget that. The base of my drum doesn’t have a moulded ridge at the end of the heater – the recess is about 10cm longer than the heater. So I’ll just retighten the clamp nut and leave it.
Agree regarding the Indesit rubbish and the trebuchet, but it’s what I’ve got so will need to be fixed if it can be.
The timing of the flashing lights did suggest a capacitor fault, do you mean the 16µF or a capacitor on the module?
Thanks
Chris

As Iadom said, if original fault was all lights flashing then it may well be a capacitor fault on the pcb.
Do you still have the original board? If so you could send it off to emw for testing.
Electrical Appliances are dangerous! Always remove the mains plug, if in doubt consult a qualified engineer. :zap:

Thanks, all. Spotted the failed capacitor (C17 – 680µF 25v) and replaced it – all well!
