Hi,
I am a young vintage collector and I might be getting a Hotpoint Twinny soon. It washes but the Spinner is acting up. According to the seller, the drum doesnt spin and the motor smokes. I hope I don’t have to replace the motor as they are long gone. My collection so far consists of a 1970 Hoover Single Tub and a 1975 Hotpoint Spinner. I am also looking out for the first hotpoint front loader, the model 1600 or later the model 1830.
PS I’m from Ireland,I dont think many irish people would be here.

if the motor is gone you will be able to see the field coil burnt,
if you are lucky it may just be a stuck solenoid.
plug out first obviously if checking,

Now your going back a bit James, If memory serves the motors on these were a relay start induction motor. If the relay is gone then both start & run windings may be energised at the same time & the motor will fry, unfortunately you will probably need to replace both the motor and relay.
When you remove the back of the machine you should see the relay in front of you attached to the chassis, it has a small Black or Brown base with a coil of fairly heavy gauge wire at the top & 3 connecting wires.

Strangely enough a short while ago I sold a Vintage radio to a young collector named James a short while ago, he was based in Ireland as well.Please remember: POWER OFF & PLUG OUT BEFORE DELVING IN, a :zap: will seriously ruin your day.

Will check it out when I get it. Maybe my local engineer will have one stashed somewhere. I was think maybe the clutch was jammed of something else but I think I’ll have to face the fact that the motor is gone. I hope some of the Irish folk on here can look out for stuff for me as I’ve only turned 16 and Donegal doesn’t have much to offer. Did anybody ever see a Model 1600 or 1830?

Well I was meant to keep the model number a secret since I am possibly the only person to own one but it is 1467. The purple twinny from 1978 but basically the same as a 9404 from the last series. I really like the fairly old stuff from 1960 to 1990. My dream machine would be obviously the one I mentioned twice already, then Hoover Keymatic’s etc.

It is worth taking the spin can out , James , in case something has gone over the side and is wrapped around the shaft , preventing the can from turning.
Also worth noting, neither wash or spin motors should be switched on if the machine is on it’s side , this will mess windings up due to the relay mis operating .
It must be close to 30 years since I last worked on ( or saw ) a 1600 , but like riding a bike , you never forget !Good luck with your searches , and don’t forget to keep us updated .

Yes the 1600 (later the 1830 when the new 1850 came along in 1973) was Hotpoint’s first front loader and had a square chrome door with controls on the top front.
It’s the model all us collectors desperately want.

The shape of the 1600 did lend itself to all sorts of cosmetic mods being completely square.
I had one that was covered in wood effect vinyl, another that had a large leaf pattern… 😀
