ParticipantHi, I have a Smeg Cucina SE335 oven and it has stopped heating up. Everything with the unit works except for the oven. The fan turns but it just blows out cold air.
I’ve read this could be an issue with the heating element rather than the thermostat but figured I would check here.
I’ve found this part on the Shop but the closest match is a Smeg SE335SS
Is this likely to be compatible?
Also, how much should this be costing me to get replaced by an engineer assuming I buy the part myself?

Hi: Unfortunately it’s not really possible to give you a price for the job, there is no set fee & what may cost for example £45.00 in one area may cost £60.00 in another.
Also you need to be aware that a lot of Engineers will not fit parts that you’ve bought yourself.
Before buying parts it would be a good idea to call a reputable local engineer to check the appliance as there are several possible causes of your problem.
You could try the UKWG repairs@ feature to see if we list an Engineer in your area.February 21, 2011 at 8:43 pm #345304ninsingh

Thanks for the reply. I think I should be able to find somebody to install it after making a few calls but I guess my biggest concern is finding out if the part is going to be compatible.

Hi: As I said previously, unless the element is checked you won’t know that this will cure the problem. That was why I suggested calling an Engineer to look at it for you, that way the engineer can test the cooker to find out exactly what is causing your problem & possibly save you money.

Ok will do, I assume I can get the checks/quotes done for free from those on repairs@

You would need to take that up with them before booking, just 1 thing to be aware of: If someone gives you a free estimate, you will normally be paying in the cost of the repair anyway. None of us work for free, we are in Business to make money.

Hi. Whilst Specialist has given sound but cautious advice, really there is little else other than the failed oven element that gives rise to the symptoms described. It is 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} certain to be the cause.

Couple of points: She was’nt asking us to diagnose a fault, she wanted to know how much it would cost. We can’t tell her that because all engineers set their own price.
When you say it’s 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} certain that the element has gone as there’s little else to go wrong, please explain. Repairing cookers is part of my daily job & we regularly find other things causing no heat on different ovens.

No problem, specialist. Its just that in my humble opinion it is 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time that the oven element is the fault. I agree there are “other” things that can go wrong. The problem with forums is people tend to defend their responses as if they have been personally criticised. I did say you were giving sound and cautious advice did I not? 😉 If it is your daily job then fine. No hard feelings. I am a spark and every oven problem I have ever attended has always been the element at fault. Just my opinion. No doubt I will eventually find the 1{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} that isn’t.

I’m not defending any opinion, I just asked you to explain your statement that in 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of cases it was an element fault. For example in the last 10 ovens i’ve been called to with no heat, only 4 have had a faulty element.
We advise people to check things first or get someone to check for them in the hope of stopping them buying the wrong parts & wasting money, if you check back through some of the posts you’ll find many occasions where people have bought parts without checking & it has’nt cured the problem, so they’ve wasted they’re money.March 7, 2011 at 9:14 pm #345312wards

its a smeg, their elements tend to be one of the more reliable parts in them
seriously tho, get it checked out first, ill disagree with specialist about most engineers not fitting parts sourced elsewhere, as everyone is trying to grab business wherever possible, we seem to be getting it more and more, and so fair game to them. ukwhitegoods shop is a good place to get the parts, and you can always ask the engineer that you want to source them yourself based on their say so.
when we fit outsourced spares, in half the cases we find the parts arent what is wrong. we have had customers making expensive mistakes ordering thermostats, ceramic plates etc, when in some cases it needs something that costs a few quid.
free call outs are very rare now, as too many customers are more than happy to get a diagnosis, then shaft the engineer by ordering the bits online and fitting them themselves…
most engineers / companys that do fit outsourced parts will charge a fixed fee, but that varies company to company, ours for example is £48.00 + vat, and includes making sure that part is required (we dont charge anything more if something else is needed instead, except for what the parts are) but a lot of other places will have a fixed fee that might be £25-35+vat but you need to make sure that that isnt just for fitting it and going, regardless of whether its the actual fault. just remember the cheaper engineers will tend to be people with more limited access to spares, who then go and get the spares from internet and you then pay on top of that., so in the end you end up paying either way…
hope that helps?

Getting a little tetchy aren’t we! I don’t really want to elaborate on my original post. I would lay odds it WAS the element given the symptoms. It would be helpful if the original posters would respond when the problem has been solved it would stop all these silly retorts. Explain 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}. Erm, 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}. Thats it.

This is a friendly forum, lets keep it civil folks. 😉
A large percentage of ‘no heat’ faults are due to element failure, but it is nowhere near 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} and with elements for some models costing £60 to £80 or more the advice given on this forum by the trade members will always be ‘test the element first’.
Its just plain common sense and to advise some one to go ahead and try an element without first testing it is poor advice, IMHO of course. 🙂
If the user does not have access to proper test equipment or know how to use them then they should not be attempting to repair electrical appliances under any circumstances.
