Participantmy Servis 1600 washing machine has suddenly started to trip the breakers in my consumer unit. ❓
It has worked fine for the past two years.Do I need to bin it or is this a known fault.

A known fault only once the electrics within have been checked as there can be many and various reasons why the breaker tripped. If you are unsure how to proceed it might be better to get a local expert in to test if for you.

I now know that the fault is intermittant, sometimes it trips the rcd sometimes not.
Is this a clue.Oilyboy.

Not in the least I’m afraid. Intermittent faults sometimes even harder to find. I refer you to my previous advice on this problem. 🙂

On the consumer unit.
There are brown switches. RCDs?
There are two red switches. Main switch.
there is one Blue switch.
It throws the blue switch.Oilyboy 😕

ParticipantRCD’s have a button labelled “test” on them in addition to the switch… MCBs don’t.

The small Brown switches are normally the MCB’s, as you said the 2 Red switches are normally your main isolators in a Split load consumer unit, which from your description sounds like what you have in your property.
If it is throwing the Blue RCD / RCBO then you have an Earth fault.
Do you have access to a Good Multimeter or Preferably an Insulation tester & know how to use them? If not then please leave well alone & call a local Engineer.Remember: POWER OFF & PLUG OUT, BEFORE delving in. Getting :zap: will ruin your day.

most of these machines are known to develop a leak on the soap dispenser, this falls on to the drum and in turn follows the curvature of the drum on to the motor,
so sometimes it would blow the fuse and sometimes not, over the years several times we would be called out for this same intermittent fault, and if you watched teh machine long enough you would then see it leaking.March 22, 2011 at 11:40 pm #345388Allsorts

Hi Oilyboy,
Never bin the machine .. alway try to keep it out of landfill .. I’m sure an engineer near you would be very happy to take it off your hands and save you the tri to the tip.
