ParticipantHi hoping for some advice please, I have an old dryer which had a bit of a leak on it which tripped my electrics. I changed plug fuse with no joy. I then bought one cheap on ebay in better nick but reported no heat. I took thermostats out of mine and replaced them on newer one. Unfortunately still no heat but it is also extra loud? I have a feeling I popped one of the thermostats, whoops, so prob no help. But should it be loud if thermostat is the only problem?
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi: If the only thing that’s faulty is the Stats then you would have no heat, not a loud noise. to find out if your problem is Bearings or Motor you need to remove the drive belt from the motor & run the machine for a short period. If the noise is gone then you need to be looking towards the tub/bearings, if the noise is still there then it looks like you have a Motor problem.
Don’t run for more than a minute or two, if the Motor is the problem they can get quite hot.
Do you have access to a Multimeter? Please remember: POWER OFF & PLUG OUT BEFORE delving in, getting :zap: can seriously ruin your day.

thanks for the swift reply
I’ve reviewed the sound again and its not actually that loud, more of a whirling noise, just louder compared to my old one. Think I’ll take the back off and give it a good clean, then try what you said if I can. Think my dad has a meter, could get him round at the wkend.February 23, 2011 at 11:42 am #345451Specialist01269

Hi: Get your Dad to check the stats for continuity, it’s quite easy to damage the stats when changing them by pressing on the bottom of them.
If the Stats are OK then you need to check the Element / s for continuity.
By the way where was the leak on your original machine?February 23, 2011 at 11:53 am #345452Rjowens101
ParticipantThanks, will do.
Not sure about the leak tbh, it used to be from back but hubby messed about with sealant and was fine for a yr, then started leaking from the front.

Hmm could be 1 of several places, but the tripping mains sounds like it’s possibly gone onto the Motor or pump & possibly blown the PCB.

Excellent, thanks for the feedback.
What was the problem getting it back together? keep an eye on it for a while in case it leaks again & if it does then turn off & look for it straight away while the leak is still there. A good sealant for high temperature items like dryers is Silicone RTV compound. -
