    Hi all

A bit of a head scratcher for you – I have been called to the above machine because it is failing to turn the motor, I thought that the motor start cap would have failed but when I tested it I got a value of 6.59uF (should be a 7uF capacitor), I have also tested:-

Both windings in the motor – both fine.
All the wiring all the way back to the plug including from plug to motor.
I have bypassed the timer and hard wired the motor to the incoming mains.
Checked voltage to motor – 220VAC
Checked motor operation with out belt attached – works both directions.
spun unloaded motor by hand to check bearings – free moving.
Put the belt back on and turned the drum by hand – all feels normal.
Insulation tested whole machine – 8.2M ohms.

And after all this it still just sits there and hums – heater works fine and I have even tried disconnecting the heater to check for a lack of current.

Does anyone have any ideas – can induction motors go weak without showing any fault on the meter?

    Thank you in advance

Perhaps worth trying a new capacitor.

As Spimps said, I would try a new Cap. The problem with using a Capacitance meter to test a Mains cap is that the meter only uses a low voltage to test, so it can’t really be accurate. I use an ESR meter to check Caps which is more accurate but not foolproof with Motor caps.

Have you tried giving the drum a helping hand when the motor hums?

If it starts turning with a helping hand fit as new cap, if it doesn’t its a new motor or ber.

Should have said that yeas I have tried kick starting the drum/motor manually with no joy which is another reason why I didn’t think it likely to be cap although I will admit that even though I had one with me I didn’t actually try replacing it.
