KeymasterHi
Two of the plastic paddles inside the drum have become detached on our circa 1999 AEG 72620 Lavamat washing machine.
A new machine will be financially challenging at present, so a knowing a repair will be cost effective would be good news. Can anyone help with the following thoughts and options?
Looking at the paddles closely the tabs that go through the drum to hold it in place seem to have taken a battering. The tabs on the leading edge when turning clockwise have broken off, and it has also pushed back the parts of the steel drum that they engage with (the bits that look like they’re normally a curved leaf to ‘spring’ against the tab are now a vertical ‘stub’).
So I’m wondering if its worth trying:
1) Just new paddles: I’d expect them to pop out frequently, leaving the sharp edges they normally hide exposed with consequent damage to clothes. I could fix them in place with silicone sealant if that would be effective!
2) New drum and paddles: Is this too expensive to warrant? Could I fit it myself or is some recalibration or special tooling needed?
3) Deeper fixing: I guess something was fouling on the ‘far side’ of the paddle tabs, and unless this is fixed any new paddles will simply foul again and damage new drum/paddles. The heating element seems to be the only thing nearby, but I can’t see any signs of scuffing on it when peering through the drum’s holes. Is this simply the bearings or some other part wearing out of alignment?
4) New machine: Oh hum!

I would stick with that machine as its a good one but the baffles have been replaced with new types that screw in. The downside is that the inner drum has to be removed in order to fit the screws that are supplied with the new baffles. Although not particularly difficult to do as the front comes off on this machine, it is not exactly DIY and you probably need someone to do it for you.
Post your postcode here and maybe someone can help you or look up a local agent in the directories section.September 1, 2004 at 6:12 am #115861admin

Hi
Thanks for the reply. It certainly seems that way from our point of view. Out of interest, why would you classify it as a good one?

Screw into the original drum? Great if so. Is this a common-ish issue then?

Doesn’t sound too daunting. I’ve already had it apart to replace the water distributor board (I think that’s what I was told its called) and service the pump when it was blocked.
Are there any particularly awkward stages in the dissasembly/assembly? Does the drum inner reseat itself properly and are there any special requirements (torque, etc) for fastening it back in?

KT8, Kingston/Hampton/Surbiton sort of area. There’s a ServiceForce depot just around the corner that I’ve used for other white goods parts. Is there a part number for the new baffles plus fixings should I end up doing it myself?
Thanks again for the reply. I really appreciate it.
Cheers
