ParticipantJust had my motor apart and was wondering if any experts could tell me how much life is left in my armature. Having looked at the brushes I think they’re the older non laminated type, which I think has caused a bit of overheating. Was going to change the brushes over but was wondering if its already too late for this armature/motor.

It doesn’t look great, some uneven gaps there, it is still possible to get a new armature for these.
It is a pattern spare but I have used them for over 30 years with few problems.
If the drum bearings are sound ( cheap enough to fix if not ) then it should be well worth repairing this machine.
You could take a chance on new laminated brushes but do run the risk of blowing the control unit.
Replacement armature is an ARM20,

The gap that is dead centre on the picture appears larger than the others.
Check the segments at 180° to that gap and if there is evidence of similar wear then it will not last long.
Damage can also be caused by a faulty pump, if the drain pump is noisy then it may fail intermittently and this will cause rapid brush failure and motor damage if not replaced.

Ok, will do.
I’ve got 2 spare control units inc one brand new one so i’m not too worried about that (I wanted one as a spare so put two really low bids on ebay and won both). It does spin ok from cold but just sparks a bit at low rpm.
Only fault with the washer is it sometimes fails to do the final spin, and i’ve been told it can be to do with the armature overheating, although i’m hoping new brushes and a clean out of all the dust will sort it.
Edit:
Drain pump is new, the other one did fail but think it was caused by it just sitting and not doing anything apart from pumping for hours due to it ‘sticking’ before the final spin. Will see how it is with new brushes before doing anything else.

You need to observe the motor at high speed, if there is a lot of arcing then the armature is goosed.
If you need an armature and have difficulty obtaining one then drop an e-mail to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk and they may be able to help.
If you have a decent local repair shop they may be able to obtain an ARM20 for you, well worth changing.
