    Hi,

We’ve had our fridgemaster MTBL 140NG for just over 18 months and recently it will not maintain a temperature above -2 degrees, no matter what setting the thermostat knob is set to. The compressor pump is running constantly and there is a thick formation of ice 1/2 way down the back of the fridge. The fridge is now ruining food on a weekly basis by freezing it, and I need to sort it out.

I’ve checked the door seal and that seems fine, so my best guess is it needs a new thermostat?

Is this a part that’s replaceable and available off the shelf, and if so, where from?

    Many thanks,

    Tom 🙂

sounds like isulation breakdown on the rear if the ice in the fridge is more than 1/2 inch thick?

easy trick as the stat on these controls both fridge and the freezer is to measure the temp on the freezer at same time as the fridge. if the fridge is -2
on min (i.e t/stat setting 1) then the freezer should be significantly colder than -20

but im not a refrigeration engineer, just a retailer. hope that helps…

I don’t think it’s the insulation, as the ice is not thick, and the fridge is the coldest at the back, it freezes jars of jam, bags of salad, you name it.

The fridge doesn’t have a freezer box, so I can’t try that trick, the whole unit is at a constant -2 even when the stat is set to a hair above zero (ie almost off)

erm… contradiction either its thick or it isnt?!

regardless, whats the temp in the salad bin and in the front of the fridge?

also how often is the compresser kicking in, you say its running all the time, but is it actually permanently running without cutting out at all?

and where is the fridge? is it near a radiator or heat source ???

also check the seal of the door, the hinge pins bend and the doors can warp easily if the wrong kind of pressure is applied (ie leant on to get down to bottom/ pulled on to get back up)

if its not cutting out at all then it might be worth replacing the stat as it wont be recognising that its got down to temp but our experience of fridgemaster, id be expecting it to not last much longer.

also how long after positioning it did you leave it, before you turned the plug on???

hello tom, how much of the back wall is iced up?
is it uniformly iced all the way down, or just at the top, or top left hand corner?

Oops – sorry! I’m not sure exactly how thick the ice is, but it can’t be more than 10mm or so, as it doesn’t interfere with the back of the shelves. The ice comes pretty much half way down the back of the fridge, and it stops in an even line approx half way down. I’ll try and measure the temp in the salad bin and get a photo tonight.

The fridge is integrated, and the hinges seem OK, they close the door straight, and the door seal sits flush all the way around. As far as I can see the compressor is running all the time, I can hear it running every time I go to it. It is sited next to the oven, obviously not ideal, but there’s no other room for it in our kithcen.

Would the process I followed when installing it 18 months ago still have an effect now?

I’ve got a strong feeling that the ‘stat is the problem, and obviously want to get it repaired before the compressor packs up and I have to fork out for my third fridge in 3 years!

gut feeling is its shot, almost straight edged blocks of ice are classic usually irrepairable failures.

however you do say its integrated. it might just not have enough air circulation where its cited, and with the oven next to it heating air behind the units, that could be enough for it to overwork if the thermostats phial tube is too close to the outside of the carcass. id be tempted to pull it out the unit and run it stand alone for a few days at no3 and see if it goes back to normal.

as for process installing it 18 months ago having an effect now, elaborate? what WAS your process of installation ???
