ParticipantI am due to visit the job shortly, I have experienced this type of noisy spin on someone else’s machine and found the dryer heater was not screwed on properly. Client did not say how old is it, I suspect it a 2007/8 model.
By looking on this forum, it appears that it is not worth fixing the drum bearings on this machine if it is the bearings. Is it usually BER on these machines?
Have I got this right? It’s not practical to remove the drum out of the machine without tipping the machine upside down?
I seem to recall from my training that I can replace the bearings without dismantling the machine, a case of removing the drum spider. But I can’t remember how I did it.

Likely as not as the drum shaft can be seriously damaged. But you won’t know that ’til you take the drum spigot off and that’s a load of fun, swearing, cursing and loss of blood in order to get to that decisive stage.

You NEVER EVER tip machines upside down, well, not unless you’re putting it in the skip that is. (Might be the best move in this case by the way – but that is just my own personal take TBH).
The spigot can be removed just by taking the back off by the way.
All the best. 😈

Thanks for the warning, I don’t literally mean tipping upside down, some machines you tip it sideways. I have come across a fair few drum failures and rarely carry out the repairs as I found 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of it are not worth it after taking into account of the age of the machine and it’s not a good use of labour. Most of my clients want me out of their house within 2 hours!
I will look forward to the job with an angle grinder! BTW has anyone actually bought a cast iron spider for the machine (I saw the spider advertised on Connect)? me thinks it like trying to spruce up a Lada!

Been to the job, found the drum was loose along with cracks on the spider. I saved myself from cursing and blood by saying it’s not worth repairing it.
The machine in question is 3 years old, same age and model as mine but mine has 5 years warranty, it broke down 8 times. The client’s machine was the first fault in three years. No justice in it?
Before anyone questioned why I have the same make and model, I wasn’t an engineer 4 years ago! If I had known, we would have not bought it.

Hang on a second let me get my calculator…….
3 yrs old x 5 yrs guarantee + ? 365 ÷ 8 breakdowns so far
therefore/ parenthesis [5(x + 2]/5 = 25/5 =
4.5333 more breakdowns due before the 5 year guarantee ends. Unless of course they decide further repair is uneconomic and then….hang on…calculator again……
5(x + 2) ? 365 ÷ 8 = £18.44 will be remunerated by your insurers toward a replacement machine.
HTH? :clown:

We are not with D&G, just good old Comet. I know they have a ceiling price before writing the machine off and give us a new one. Just a case of waiting for the price barrier to be broken through….
