Sometime early last year I got a knock on the door from someone in the village. She said “You’ve been kind enough to fix my washing machine in the past and I wondered if you could take a look at this table lamp for me? The lead into the base has worn away and the wires are exposed.”

Sadly, I accepted the challenge, took in the lamp and asked her to call back the next day. She did, I sorted it, job done, happy lady customer, more beer money in the back pocket.

A week or two later there was a smelly Electrolux vac and a 2 bar fire left in my rear porch with a note from another neighbour attached. Word got round that I fixed a table lamp and this cheeky soul wondered if I could sort the vac and fire out? Bu&&er me but then a while later I saw someone else coming round the back with another vac. WHAT THE F….??? 👿

It turns out the local churchgoers have a ‘Coffee Morning’ every Thursday and the ‘Lady with the lamp’ stuck a postcard on the church hall noticeboard whilst she was there and since then half the ruddy village bring their duff stuff to me to fix.

Needless to say I preached the Gospel according to St.Martin chapter 1 verse 1. “And the Lord said, take thy bl**dy duff electrical goods to thy local dump and stop bothering thy local washing machine repair man!

I’ve always dabbled in other stuff but generally it’s not very lucrative, although it does keep your brain active. In the last couple of years, I’ve managed to successfully repair a couple of laptops and digital camcorders and for some time I’ve been training myself on dismantling, cleaning and aligning porro prism binoculars. There’s some very helpful sites, not least Youtube.
