ParticipantI went out to this machine, it was repaired by a previous engineer and it was the brushes that went according to the owner. It works until now.
He says that it makes a metallic noise when it turns then it stopped turning. I thought maybe some loose coins was causing the problem, I checked for drum rotation, moves freely then I checked the catchpot and found 70p.
Carried out insulation checks, it was producing a reading of big fat zero. Oh dear I thought…
Checked the motor, no difference even with plug removed
checked the heater, some resistence but not high enough I would have liked
Door interlock was iffy but works
didn’t check the drain pump as it did work as it drained the water away well, given what happened later on, I should have checked it.My insulation tester is working fine, I tested it before I started on the machine.
In the end it blew up at the timer unit. so I am puzzled what caused it, was the drain pump caused the shorting or the motor was faulty?
Anyway I did the man a favour, he wanted a new machine.

I don’t think I have ever seen a pump blow the timer unit on a WM machine.
Motor, interlock or chafed wiring harness to motor 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time.

I wonder if the previous engineer failed to clean out the motor before fitting the new brushes, can it cause the shorting if it was not cleaned out? I do know that failing to clean it can cause arcing.
Just that the very low insulation reading of Zero was bothering me and see if there’s any lessons to be learnt from it. I couldn’t fathom it as I did disconnect the motor multiplug and still get a Zero reading usually if disconnected I would get a different readings.
Having thought more, perhaps the timer unit was faulty all along?
The likely outcome would that be the motor was not cleaned out, causing the poor insulation and caused the timer unit to malfunction by giving poor insulation readings after the motor disconnected?

Only a close inspection of the board would have given you the likely answer. Checking my database over and I have only had 2 cases where the pump has melted and taken the board tracks with it. So I too dont think the pump to be the cause. We will never know….. 😕

Checking my database… I have had two instances of the on/off switch causing a zero insulation reading.
p.s. My database is in my head. Not sure what Martin uses.

He uses a 5 Terabyte external hard drive connected via super HDMI link to a custom surgeon-installed socket at the base of his brain.
WM51. That would have a hybrid timer. The bit of it you would have needed to look at is tight up against the cabinet so you’d have had to pull the timer out. I’m 80{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure it was the interlock what done it, although it may have been aided and abetted by water leaking onto it from a hole it had rubbed in the door seal.
