    The latest breed of E/lux machines now are able to weigh the clothing before it starts the washing. You stuff the washing in the drum, select a programme, it reads out the weight (within 500 grams) and advises how much detergent to bung in. (see THIS FRONT PAGE NEWS ARTICLE.(These models have a weight sensor strapped to one of the dampers)

    Also, this same machine can ‘steam’ your clothing to prevent creasing at the end of the cycle, enabling easy ironing of certain fabrics. What happens is that a little water comes into the drum, enough to cover the element, then the heater comes on for a few moments thus producing steam….!!

    Stand by for more servicing nightmares to follow….. 😈

    Re: Feel the weight

    Some have used weight sensors for ages, I think some Miele’s use them. Dunno how well they work, I’ve not heard any good reports but a few bad.

    Steam = hot mist. 😉

    Servicing nightmares = true. 😉

    LG been up to this for years haven’t they?

    Re: Feel the weight

    I remember hearing about this development in the early 90s. I thought it had somehow already been incorporated into the electronics via something I completely don’t understand called, “fuzzy logic.” (Which nevertheless sounds like my kind of logic. :oops:) I had imagined today’s more sophisticated boards were getting some sort of feedback on the load size from the amount of current the motor was using, to enable them to adjust the water level or something. Must admit, I stopped thinking about it about ten years ago when it didn’t seem to be causing any trouble!

    Re: Feel the weight

    Manufacturer’s have been claiming to adapt the program to the load for years. The trade retail press is full of claims from all manufacturer’s eg “Sophisticated sensors ensure the machine doesn’t use a drop more water than needed for each wash.”

    I’ve noticed many higher spec machines have flow meters on the inlet as well as pressure sensors, which presumably allows the machine to calculate how much water has been soaked up by the washing. Combine this with motor load and turbidity sensors, and there is already quite a lot of information to feed the “fuzzy logic”.

    I am not sure how useful it would be to actually weigh the washing. How would the machine react to a load of already wet towels, or for that matter rubber backed floor mats?
