    Hi all,

I’ve been pointed towards this forum and have been told you’re “helpful and knowledgeable” (no pressure!) 😀

My 8 year old Hotpoint EW82 cooker has started giving trouble, with 2 hob rings not functioning correctly. This model has a ceramic ring front left and a halogen ring front right.

The front left ceramic ring comes on full blast at any setting of the control dial except off. With the dial off it switches off. In other words it’s all or nothing, no half measures.

The front right halogen ring comes on ok but at higher power settings it seems to cycle off too much, in other words it doesn’t deliver full blast like it used to but switches on and off. The duty cycle can be anything up to 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} off at full power, which is way short of the heat it should produce. When the ring is on though the power is there, it’s just that it is off too much.

I’d like to source parts and fix this myself but I don’t know enough about how cookers work. Is the incoming mains wired to each control dial in parallel and from there to the ring and back to neutral, or is there some kind of central controller? Is a thermostat used to feedback the ring temperature to the control dial or do the dials simply work on a duty cycle basis?

It seems strange that I have trouble with 2 rings – presumably I’m looking for a single failed component which could influence both?

Looking at a spares website I can find an energy regulator (which looks like the control knob) and a “cut in” (not sure what that does), but I’m not sure which part of the system switches the power to each ring on and off. Any tips?

ENERGY REGULATOR for EW82S [6204034-EW82S] – £13.93Hotpoint Spares, Hotpoint Parts, Hotpoint Washing Machine Spares
CUT IN for EW82N [6101453-EW82N] – £8.57Hotpoint Spares, Hotpoint Parts, Hotpoint Washing Machine Spares

Last point to note, about a month ago I noticed the fan which blows air over the control dials was making a rattling sound but this has since settled down and is normal again. I’m just wondering whether this fan could have stalled and lead to overheating of the control dials, would this be consistent with the fault I’m seeing?

It sounds as though you just have two faulty regulators. Part number as you list 6204034.

These are not easy machines to work on, changing the regulators would not be classed as simple DIY IMHO.

If you do intend to go ahead then make sure you buy from a reputable source, there are several different makes of regulator used and the new one ‘should’ have the wiring information in the box. Do not attempt to fit without this info, and of course be sure to isolate from the mains first.

Thanks. Any clues on how I would strip the cooker down to access the regulators? Is it from the back, front, etc?

From every direction, I did say it was not a DIY job. Both sides off,hob off , console and several other bits & pieces.

Ok. I think it would be a good idea to change the console cooling fan at the same time as this may have caused the problem to start with. Any idea what cost I might be looking at if I get a repair company to do this job (fan + 2 regulators)? Just weighing up whether it’s wise to fix it or better to replace.

Unless I can find some directions on how to take the cooker apart to get to the regs and fan I’m probably going to have to pay someone to come in and do it.

If it’s like some of the others, it’s sides off, hobtop off, facia off and you then have to be a three handed contortionist to get to what you actually need to get to. Usually involving at best a scrape or two but often the appearance of blood.

You can tell we like these sorts of cookers. 🙂

Most repairers will do it on a standard labour charge but that varies a bit across the country, expect between about £45 and £80 in labour depending on who and where.

Thanks a lot, the more I learn about what’s involved the more I’m thinking I’ll get someone in.
