ParticipantHi there
I need to put a fridge freezer in our garage. I know it’s likely to get outside the recommended temperature range, but don’t have much choice – kitchen only has space for a small f/f
I understand if I get one with seperate temperate controls I can stop the freezer switching itself off, but I can’t find any site that lets you search on that basis, so…. any recommendations? (Preferably cheaper if possible, having blown a large chunk of budget on an ISE washer!)
Cheers

Hi Andy,
Don might know of one but I haven’t seen a twin compressor (which is what you need, not just separate controls) fridge freezer in goodness knows how many years. Even most all the current crop of American fridges are single compressor.
The sad reality is that people won’t pay for them and, sit it against a similar size single compressor model and it’d be going on for 50-100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} more in terms of cost. I think it’s just because people don’t think about it and reckon that a fridge is a fridge is a fridge, which isn’t always the case.
And that leaves you with two choices, heat the garage to above about 5-10?C or find a way to keep it in a normally heated room. 😕

The only twin compressor machine I know of is the Liebherr CNESF5113 Not cheap I know but without doubt they are the best refrigeration brand there is. They also produce for Miele as well.
A bit too good for a garage 😉

Hi Don
Equally, Beko do a range of f/f that they claim are suitable for garages, or is that just marketing bull?

Hi Andy,
You’re searching for the wrong thing. 😉
A few fridge freezers might have separate controls, my GE does for fridge and freezer but it’s still only got one compressor which is the important part of the equation.
There’s an article here about putting fridges and freezers etc. in garages and other outbuildings with an explanation of climate classes. Basically there are no domestic units that can be run outside these temperatures with any degree of reliability, in other words, if they don’t work then the manufacturer can turn round and tell you that it’s tough, they never said they’d work.
I think the Beko ones might be a little better, perhaps but when I looked they were still rated with the climate classes in that article which are worldwide standards. So, how much truth there is to the claims I’ll allow you to judge for yourself.

Hi
Beko refrigeration is SN climate class which means the safe working temperature is +10 to +32 degrees C. I have queried their claims on several occasions and as yet I have not recieved a satsfactory answer.
Hype? Could well be.

Thanks for the replies guys, would separate devices solve the problem? But I guess the climate class is still an issue?
Failing that, I guess I’ll just have to risk it 😕

Separates would certainly be a better bet but, as you rightly point out, the climate classes can still give issues as in the machines were not designed to operate outside those temperature limitations. So you could still get some of the issues outlined in that article, like condensation issues etc or, in summer, the machines running extensively.

I guess it’s just a case of caveat emptor then!
Seems a bit frustrating that the manufacturers don’t cater for this, I can’t believe it’s that uncommon

It’s not uncommon at all, its just that a lot of people don’t listen or read before they buy so they don’t know, walk into a showroom, see a load of white boxes and buy the cheapest one.
Then we get the complaints about why they won’t work wherever or however.
It really is staggering how many people do that.
But to make refrigeration work in low temperatures like that isn’t cheap, requires thicker insulation so less storage space, twin compressors, sealed outer case, waterproofed and so on.
It’s sorta like asking for an race edition car, it costs a substantial amount more and on the face of it, looks like you get less. People just don’t go for it in the showrooms, not that half the chains would even begin to know about the problems with this anyway.
Plus it seems to be a peculiarly UK centric problem. Global manufacturers mostly these days I’m afraid and, at best, you’ll get a unit designed for pan-European use, from Northern Russia to North African temperature ranges, the only temperatures you can regulate to any degree is ambient within a home.
And that’s pretty much why it is the way it is.
