Now I Know It’s Safe & Secure

Okay, so I was thinking the other day about this whole RC, 0800, DAG thing and how much it was a thorn in everyone’s side…

Ade came up with FME to try to combat it and, that’s fine. I understand that and get it but I got to thinking about it over the past few weeks and about alternative strategies.

Whilst I broadly agree with what Ade’s doing or trying to do I don’t know that the proposition will work on the net and, I’ve voiced that concern to Ade directly. That’s not to say it won’t work, I just have my doubts for several reasons which I’m not going to get into here. However, hat’s off to him for trying to do something and make something of it

I do have my own take on it though. As you may have surmised.

My take is far more long game.

In order to move forward the site HAD to undergo the changes that it has done and, that means a hell of a lot of pain for me in the short term. It’ll be months to get back where we were let alone move forward on many fronts and all that time is going to be me, again, knocking my pan in on stuff most people will never see or realise is there. It’s that old internet black magic stuff again.

We’ve now stabilised the site, there’s a few bits that need tidied up and all the content needs to be looked at, pretty much by me. The mods can help a bit with a shedload of broken link fixing in the forums but, asides from that it’s yours truly that’s on point.

The Find An Engineer thing is now on every page (I think) of the main content site and linked to more than 500 product lines from the store as well. That will be over 1500 or so pages pointing at it, some ranked, some not in Google, Yahoo and Bing which are my targets for this.

On top of which there’s the advertising in the public forums pointing to that page as well now.

But that’s only the start. 😉

The approved repairer pages are really, really important. You need to get the info up there and encourage others to do it as well.

Ade, if they’re on FME, come up with a “Find Us On FME” thing. Does two things, adds to FME and adds legitimacy and weight to the listings on both sides. The backlinks will do you a favour anyway and don’t say I’m not good to you or trying to help. 😉

I do need time to sort it all out though so it hopefully achieves the desired effect.

There’s two more major stages at least to what I want to do and where I want to be with all this, the facelift of UKW was only the first baby step.

I’m keeping a lot of what I’m up to completely with me and Sudeep who’s coding it all, this is very deliberate and it’s not a trust thing per say, it’s more of a, I know some of what I’ll find and do down the rabbit hole, but perhaps not all of it.

But it is incredibly liberating for me to have the shackles of old technologies removed. Even if it is a whole sh1tload of work for me.
