    Hi all,
I noticed my Whirlpool side by side USA made fridge freezer wasn’t getting cold and had defrosted completely, checked the bottom panel which was full of fluff where it draws in air so cleaned all that out, light is still on and can hear a fan or a motor running at the back of the freezer unit but not getting cold at all in either the fridge or freezer. How do I start to try to find the fault ? I am in a remote area and the only appliance engineer doesn’t want to look at it for me so need to sort the problem myself.

    Re: Whirlpool AZR740/S problem

Further to my previous post I have now taken out the fridge and removed the back panel and the panel inside the freezer, both fans are running, the compressor is hot to the touch around the top but doesn’t seem to be humming as you would expect, the evaporator behind the cover in the freezer compartment is not cold to touch. The compressor seems to have a relay and overload device can anyone advise how i test the compressor and the devices that control it ?

    Hi Bob,

It does sound suspiciously like a compressor fault. I’d be fairly confident that this is the problem from what you’ve described.

To do anything with that you would need specialist tools for refrigeration work and to have a compressor replaced in one of those machines is going to cost, I would think, £2-350 roughly. Basically, it’s not a DIY job.

    Re: Whirlpool AZR740/S problem

I have googled the problem and found a few posts where the symptoms have been the same as mine and the culprit has been the compressor relay, also some people saying the common cause for this relay failing is the air inlet over the condenser being blocked with fluff and pet hair which is exactly what I found. Can anyone advise how I test this relay I think from the manual its a PTC unit part no.4812 282 98004

    Re: Whirlpool AZR740/S problem

An update to this issue is I have now taken the start relay off the compressor and its not the same part as quoted in the manual, its part no 4SP1019, 2188508, 27, K02R Made in Mexico. It has three wired going in to it and is connected to what looks like the overload unit by one wire, there are three terminals connecting to the compressor body. It rattles when shaken and a few very small pieces of black glass or ceramic came out of it too. I have searched a few UK parts websites but cant find this part number can anyone advise where to get one or what I could replace it with ?

    Re: Whirlpool AZR740/S problem

    Hi Bob,

    A couple of questions…

    Is this a UK model?

If it isn’t a UK model tracking spares for it will be nigh on impossible from the UK as the model number (as I have found) is not trackable. That basically means that there are no UK spares supplies for that model number.

If you have the 12NC number one of us may be able to track it down but, again, this is dependent on it being a UK machine. Can you get us the 12NC number?

Whirlpool don’t support (nor pretty much anyone else) machines that are not in the country that they should be as many are very market specific. So, if it a pukka US machine the only way that you will get the correct parts is to contact someone Stateside for them.

    Re: Whirlpool AZR740/S problem

As Kwatt says you have to be wary when sourcing parts for this machine.
The ARZ740 fridge freezers are pukka American built appliances which are built like a tank and are always worth repairing and a lot were imported into the UK from the late 1990’s onward. Most of them were made for the UK market and these usualy have a 12nc number on the rating plate of 858674001020. To confuse matters further some of the earlier ones do not have a 12nc number but are to UK spec. The US spec models that got into the UK always have an external transformer to up the supply voltage.

The part number 4812 282 98004 is the correct part number for the PTC for the UK versions, the numbers off the PTC itself are factory codes only.

    Re: Whirlpool AZR740/S problem

    Hi Thanks for the advice.
The fridge says assembled in the USA so looks like it is one of the American made ones that you mention, it was bought from Freemans catalogue and had a Whirlpool warranty so Iam surprised if Whirlpool UK dont support it with a spares service.
I think this is the number you mention 8586-740-01021
I have found a few posts from the USA discussing repairing this fault with a universal relay replacement kit you can buy over there and instructions how to fit it, I assume we cant buy something like that over here to replace this unit ?
