ParticipantThis machine has been absolutely reliable although now approx 10 years old. Suddenly on the last wash I could hear a grinding noise (the machine worked fine otherwise and is not heavily used now). If I rotate the drum by hand I can hear this unpleasant grinding sound and I wonder if a screw/nail/coin etc has got between the rotating drum and the outer fixed drum. I have examined the perforations carefully and can’t see anything. I have also tried lifting the drum to see if bearings seem at fault or the support spider is cracked (a common fault I believe). I cant really feel/see any unusual movement. And it works fine. But although a well engineered machine is it time to call it a day? Or is it still worth fixing. Any suggestions as to the likely problem and solution?

Hi,
I would be the bearings that have gone on the machine.
Depends how bad they are whether it’s worth doing or not and to find out, you have to strip it down.
It is a good machine and was a pukka Blomberg built in Germany probably but, buying a Blomberg now it isn’t as the name was bought by Beko and now you would get a Beko in a dress and not a machine of the quality of they one you have.

I am reluctant to give up on this machine so I will get hold of an engineer to get a hands on opinion and also likely cost of a repair. Trouble is there are plenty of bargains out there for new machines so can see that I might end up going down that route. Any good british made ones to be considered? Oh I forgot we dont make anything anymore.

I got an engineer in to take a look at the machine. The bearings were ok, also drum support spider. But the drum was slightly distorted with slight dents visible so he concluded that it had hit a foreign object on fast spin (1500 rpm)but what it was is a mystery but is trapped somewhere behind the drum – hence grinding noise. But the bottom line is that it is not worth fixing (unless anyone has a spare inner drum)which is a shame as the basic engineering is very solid and ok even though 11 years old. So following his recommendation I will now look at getting a Bosch replacement(german made).
