I was called to the above cooker, two BGas sparkies been out and said cooker was at fault. Why two seperate visits I don’t know but cooker had been taken out. I presume to access the cooker plate.
Cooker definately has an earth fault. I Meggared each element individually (4) – no fault. Tried disconnecting each motor individually, fault still there, tried each cut in/cut out no joy (4). I tried each lamp holder – no joy. No obvious chaffed wiring. Switches look ok but didn’t take them out.
Ran out of time for next job. Back tomorrow PM maybe.
I thought was going to be two minute job – pah !!
Suggestions would be appreciated – I’ll look at the switches properly. Thinking about it now, only things haven’t checked are t/stats and timer??? is possible for a t/stat or timer to cause it??

Hi Steve 1,
No it was still connected. I’ll try with it disconnected. What are you thinking? A fault on the supply line?

If the earth supply is still connected you will get faulty earth readings. It is important to disconnect all 3 wires prior to checking for leaks. 😉

hi
yes dissconnect all 3 supply wires (l,n,&e) then test again as you can get earth faults with the supply cable still connectedMay 5, 2011 at 8:53 am #350610RocketMan

what a bafoon, that’s me not you. Yes of course. Why I didn’t disconnect it I don’t know. I do it when PAT testing. Then again, 99.99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} percent of the time you can ID the faulty item easily when doing repairs. I guess I just jumped in. I feel a tad embarrassed 😳 😳 :boops:
I’ll re-check with all disconnected. I’m not convinced there is problem with the cooker, I still think it’s a line fault. AFter testing if I get no earth fault? I might just connect the supply to an isolated 40a connection box switch the supply back on – I bet it trips. I can’t test any further I don’t have the kit. I’m still not convinced it’s the cooker. Why 2 seperate B Gas sparkies? I’ll let you know how I get on.
Thanks
Steve

I wonder did you check with lamp units disconnected to see if tripping then? Had a few of these with lamp units causing tripping, you need to screw out lamp & check for burning of lamp unit connections where bulb sits.

I had a cooker blowing the main fuse (yes fuse) because of a faulty lamp holder. It also took out the thermostat (the internal switch which feeds the lamp and fan). After fitting a new thermostat I tested it without a lamp and it was fine. I put in a new lamp amd bang the fault was there.
So I would test a lamp holder with it disconnected and a new lamp fitted

Thanks spanner51 and Seamy,
I did go back and re-tested everything with the cooker completely disconnected and still no joy. I have seen faulty lamps causing problems but I checked them both with both connections taken off. 😕
I’m a bit of a Rottweiler really,I don’t normally let things go and always like to get to the bottom of things incase I come accross them again.
I think the customer is looking to get rid of it. To be honest I think she’s quite pleased at the thought of a new oven. I’ll report back…
