KeymasterThe subject has been raised before on several occasions and was at the meeting as well, why are people anomymous? I often get the arguement of “why should I answer if I don’t know who I’m talking to?”. In all honesty I’d like to put this one to bed.
Well as I explained to a couple of people in the industry, just because you don’t threaten or mistreat your agents and are willing to listen and attempt to address their comments doesn’t mean that everyone else takes the same line. With certain manufacturers and WP’s in particular the fear of retribution for saying anything is very, very real. I beleive, from what I have been told, at least one of the two largest manufacturers in the land has directly warned its agents from so much as posting here, I’ll leave you to work out who. We have another who has levelled threats and critisism of UKW and hinted at non-particiption just a tad strongly, so what does anyone expect will happen?
Even casting all that aside you still have to respect the privacy of the individual and, should that person wish to remain unknown, then so be it.
But a most important point is that a post, if it is praise no-one has a problem, if it is crtical then it all of a sudden an issue and even if it is critical does the fact that the person that wrote it anonymous make the writing any less valid? I don’t think it does, in fact I think it encourage people to speak freely and without constraint.
The real kicker for me is that many a manufacturer, WP or insurer has a login on UKW and whilst I and Dave know who they are no-one else does or will, just like the trade accounts. Guess what? Yep, they mostly use usernames that also hide their true identity!
I don’t have an issue with it but I do find it a tad hypocritical to comment as some do when a critisism like that is levelled and yet the person or company critisising does exactly what they are being critical about.
In the end, it won’t and can’t change and we will continue to protect the identities of ALL parties but, what’s good for the goose….

I would like to endorse what has just been said. Until recently I worked for a Manufacturer who has warned its network of posting any adverse comment on this website. The area manager involved works for a massive manufacturer who I can’t name cause they’d want to sue the a*** of me and its so counter productive. How effective is a network that can’t profit from being open and honest instead of hiding from the gremlins in their own cupboards.
To all those who want to remain anomymous…well ok its your call and when you are able to change your log in site admin will oblige…just ask.

Whilst that sort of attitude persists in this industry some people have no option but to hide their identity as far as they possibly can and, frankly, I don’t blame them. The situation as it stands has been created primarily by a few manufacturers and WP’s who seem to think it’s okay to go around threatening the people that work for them and whilst they continue to do so, there will be anonymous accounts without doubt. Sadly, attitudes like that tend to come back to haunt you at some stage and it will generally prove to be very counter-productive eventually.
And just in case you think it’s no longer a problem, I have recently been made aware of a certain company threatening an agent (albeit veiled) for making use of some of the information and advice on UKW. Sad, very sad.
