Hi,
I have a vintage Hoovermatic Deluxe 3314L Twin Tub which was operating very well until the spin motor tripped the switch. I think some debris or the likes are shorting it and I’m very worried it’s ruined because you can’t buy them anymore and I really like this machine. The only other possibilty is brushes but the last time I checked they were good. There are no water leaks in the machine bar a teaspoon from the pump which is part of the character of these machines.
I will take it out today (which is a pain) and check it out.

the armature is the most likely but field coils can go
look for build up of carbon dust around brushes in case thats it
you dont state which switch it is tripping but i am assuming it is the RCD which is the switch with a test button
all my suppliers are listing an armature but likely cost is around £50-60 but it may well be obsolete unless hoover has old stock

Hi Dave,
Thank you for your reply, doesn’t sound good. I will have a look anyhow. What beats me is that it was performing excellantly and then it tripped the fusebox without any smoke or arcing or even straining noises.

thats because you have an rcd in the old days without rcd this motor would have carried on going till it started to smoke
rcd’s stop a lot of fires

Hi Dave,
I took it out and took the top plastic part off since it appears to be an easy motor to strip. The brushes are half way long so I can still get some use out of them. The armature looks ok other than being a bit dirty. Also a small screw was trapped inside the motor, I did not lose any during restoration so it must have been there for a while and maybe it caused the trip? Put it back together and it still trips. I took it apart and decided to take some photos for you. It is quite dirty. I noticed that the larger part of the armature has a couple of notches from the top but this also appears to be not a recent event if any as nothing fell out. The motor is free running. I am also told that the motor has no earth and it is insulated via the rubber mounts. My friends are hinting me towards the wiring now.

i dont think there is an earth to this motor so even if it has a short to earth it may not blow
you need to get the insulation checked on field coil and armatureDave

OK, here is the really bad news………both the armature AND the field coil have together overheated and subsequently shorted out. The symptoms are not always apparent as often the brushes still look intact and their contact surfaces clean and shiny, so too the commutator segments appear undamaged. Therefore the only solution is to replace both armature and field coil. But as both seem OBSOLETE I don’t think that’s an option. 🙁
The good news is that many motor rewind companies can rewind them both, but at what cost?…I’ve no clue..sorry. 😮

Hi Martin,
That is very grim sounding news to a 16 year old collector… 🙁 What caused it to burn out do you think as when it was going well at the time and when it tripped there was no smell or smoke. I think I can source a motor for it but since I’m 16 it is the money that is the worst part.
