ParticipantHi Folks
A few days ago my Whirlpool 858615815020 (S20D RSS33-A/G) American-style f/f started making a buzzing noise, and on investigation it’s coming from a white plastic box on the right hand side of the unit as I look at it from the rear. I’m assuming that this box contains a PCB, as a lot of wires feed in to it?
If I tap the box the buzzing stops – same if I turn the unit on and off again. It always comes back though after several hours. The unit itself sems to be working fine – for the moment!
I see that there are quite a few posts on problems with the PCBs in these units – if anyone knows anything specific about this buzzing I’d be very grateful for some help in fixing it.
Many thanks!
Cheers – Graham

Yes, that’s the PCB.
Once the cover is off it it should look like this electronic card, which is the replacement for it. They’re not exactly what you’d call cheap though!
The buzzing could be anything in all honesty, a relay, transformer on the board…

Many thanks for your reply K! Are there any special skills required to fit this unit, or is just a plug and play type component?
Other odd symptoms have started to appear (such as the freezer display showing two horizontal bars at the same time as the warning buzzer sounding, which will only reset after several minutes of being turned off at the mains) so I’m seriously considering changing this PCB, although like you say it’s not cheap.
Is this PCB likely to be the only failing piece of electronics or do other components tend to fail at the same time?

Yup, plug and play basically.
The front cards can give bother but it’s much, much rarer and there’s a sensor in the freezer that also occasionally gives trouble but, other than that, it always seems to be the rear board that is the problem. Put it this way, a lot of the Whirlpool guys walk in with one to a call, that says it all. 😉

Thanks K! I see that there is a £10 repair kit so I might as well try that first. It’s about time I learned how to solder…

Have fitted all the capacitors and not only is my Whirpool now acting normally but my ice maker is now working again! I’ve posted an update here: http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/forumsphpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=41632..
Many thanks K for your help on this one!
