ParticipantQuick question to you hyper-experienced brains which I’m certain you’ll be able to help me with: are seals (top-hat, bellows, carbon-seal) seals for the 9600 series interchangeable with 1500 series?
In particular, I am interested in a new top-hat seal for a 9605 but most searches turn up 1500 spares. My understanding is that the spiralator that fiots the 9600 series not only featured in the 1500 series but also in the old twin-tubs. My guess is that the drive arrangements would be similar / identical, but only you guys can confirm that.
Thanks, Connor

Yes!

No!
Specifically the “top hat seal” (a.k.a. carbon faced seal) is well and truly OBSOLETE, as is the Tripod above that. The “spirolator” (a.k.a. Gyrator) for a 9605 series is different from the older 1500 series, as is the gyrator screw, the tub support and gearbox shaft etc etc.
Basically the chances of getting the spares you need for a 9605, or any other preceeded model for that matter, are less likely than finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
That’s the bad news, the good news is that I’m clearing out my garage next month, (provided that is I manage to navigate the canals of darkest Lancashire and get back home) and will be chucking out a load of old Hotpoint van stock bits that may well include old top loader bits. If I come across anything I’ll let you have first option. 😉

I cleared out my obscenely cluttered garage only last week and threw out loads of this old stuff. 😥
Filled a midi skip. 😳
I did save one or two bits including a complete top seal and tripod kit if I am not mistaken.
If you get stuck let me know and I will have a look see. 🙂

😕
Martin, with respect, you seem to have contradicted yourself.

The question about the seals was for a mate, but they may still be interested. I myself am looking for a spiralator and lint filter, so I’d be interested if you have these.

I may well be pointing my mate in your direction. Thanks for the offer. Don’t suppose you have a spiralator in amongst the saved stuff (bit bulky so I’m guessing, “no”)?

Ah-ha! At last, I have a source that has 35 years on you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1_cygQzApU
😀
But seriously, in the absence of Martin clarifying his post I’d really appreciate your input on whether a top-hat seal for a 1500 series will or won’t fit a 9600 series machine.

You can call it what you like, it was a gyrator when I started at Hotpoint over 40 years ago and its still a gyrator as far as I am concerned. I would even allow you to get away with an agitator but that awful ‘ american’ spiralator is something I cannot accept. 👿
The basic top hat seal will fit all top loaders, the later tripod did change to incorporate a carbon faced seal in it but that would also fit earlier machines.

Yup, “spiralator” surely is an annoying term, and obviously one produced not in the technical dept but in marketing. How perverse they should take the trouble to dream up a special name just to appeal to people, when it does the complete opposite 😕 Bet they got paid a fortune for doing it too. 😆
Oh well. Anyhow, returning to the matter in hand, thanks so much for your advice on the top hats / tripods. I’ll pass the info on and see how my mate wants to proceed.
Thanks again.
Oh, almost forgot : SPIRALATOR! [makes dash for forum door]
😆
