My Bosch dishwasher needs £160 worth of parts plus labour and as itis pretty old anyway we are thinking it might be best to simply replace it. So…. I am looking for your recommendations. It needs to be slimline and freestanding. Would love a Miele (alread have their washer/dryer and a hoover) but simply can’t stretch to that.

Other than Miele what would be considered the best?

other than miele, bosch or siemens tbh!

£160 doesnt sound that expensive, what was the quote of the repair for?

also how old is the dishwasher?? anything under 10yrs, then £160 is defo worht spending on it!

bear in mind cheapest new slimlines will be chinese, without much change from £200 anyway, then you have bekos that will be about £240ish in climline form, so £160 is still looking at good value. it also depends on how much of a guarantee your engineer is offering for the repair. but still, if its a lot of work, £160 is worthwhile, if its just a seal, then your being ripped off!

more info inc bosch dw model number please 🙂

pps. this isnt a quote from premier electrics is it?

    Hi!

It is a SRS53C02GB/20. It needs a new pump (not the drain pump … that was replaced a few years ago) and that is £160 then it would be the labour on top of that. I have been quoted between £80 and £100 for a two hour job as ball park figures so up to £260 for the repair on a machine that is old and probably not running as efficiently as a new one. Not a quote from premier electrics, no. We aren’t looking for “cheap” as that is often a false economy just can’t really justify the £550 I’ve seen the Miele at!

Please, don’t taint Miele’s name for quality with Italian owned Hoover. :rolls:

    Its a vacuum cleaner. 😉

Cant be that old then, 5-6 years? can you read off the FD code for us? that will confirm the age – its the 4 small numbers under the ER no. probably starting with an 8xxx

Ah the engineer is quoting for the circulation motor/pump (part 489658 – £142 direct from bosch inc p&p+vat – see if he can reduce it or offer to get it direct yourself, in which case ask KWATT on here if he can get it for you for the same price)

The other thing is do you know how they have come to the conclusion this motor has had it? i.e have they actually taken it off or taken any panels off to inspect it? a lot of the time the motor just needs a new impellor kit and seals, and sometimes housing too, or sometimes just a start capacitor. is it possible the engineers priced it high for the worst case scenario?

seems a bit steep, but depends whos doing the work i guess – and tbh i havent ever had to do a slimline yet but i can normally replace/refurbish the circulation motor on a full size bosch in about 30-45 mins assuming disconnection from plumbing isnt a pig…

those internals are probably the same as the internals on a new bosch/siemens… and you may save 4-5 litres of water max over a current model

So what IS your max budget ?

Bearings have gone in the circulation pump causing a VERY noisy wash with nasty whining. Hubby diagnosed using internet, then I rang a couple of technicians who agreed with diagnosis. Hubby is quite happy (and capable) to do a simple repair himself but it has been implied that this is NOT a simple repair.

Tech I used before now moved away 🙁 Cheapest I’ve found to come out and diagnose is £100 with £80 taken off final bill if he does the repair. London pricing! Apparently it is tricky job ❓

bearings seizing is usually down to leakage from the main impellor seal kit, so you would have to have one of those too. your right, it isnt an easy repair but it is pretty straightforward if your practically minded. the hardest part is working out how to open up the appliance but id be tempted to let hubby go for it first and see how he does. theres a few people on here willing to talk you thru the procedure, if you order your parts from the ukwg shop and then theres the satisfaction of fixing it. The biggest test hubby will have will be working out how to get into the base.

firstly what he needs to do is unplug & unplumb machine

then remove the 4x t20 torx screws located on the left and right edges of the carcass holding the side panels on. tehy are buried a little way inside the rubbery plastic sealing strips

then ideally work outside if its nice as there will be spillages of water. it needs to lay it on its back, but jacked up in the air, ideally lifted onto a workmate for example. then slide the spring hinges out from the base, unscrew the front metal trim plate attactched to the plastic base (2x more t20 screws) and 2x brass t20 screws from the rear, and 2x t20 from the front that screw into/thru the plastic base. then disconnect the water chamber from LHS and base should slide off. theres not a lot of wiring legth free so its usefull to have a large old cardboard box to rest it on or something similar. HTH

    probably £350-£400 max…

in all honesty you wont get much better than a new bosch for those figures, if you pushed the budget a bit more youd get a siemens for £420-£460 mark, possibly with a 5yr guarantee but thats about it.

Re: New Dishwasher needed – recommendations?

Many, many thanks. We are going away shortly so will leave it until our return but will show him this response. He is pretty good at this sort of thing, even I have done the odd very simple repair (brushes and door seal on old washing machine) but appliances do seem to be getting more complex as time goes by. Used to be able to dismantle a machine with a good phillips screwdriver now it’s all torx screws! Fortunately we have the equipment so we may well have a go…. will let you know how it pans out 😉
