    AEG Tumble Dryer T56740 916096384 00

SHE told me on the phone – it works for 1 minute, then makes a strange prrrr noise and cuts out. Leave it for a couple of minutes and it will start again, then do the same.

Got there today and HE tells me – I’ve had a quick look at it and can’t find anything wrong, but it was working fine last night, now it’s dead.

    RCD was tripped.

I checked the heater for foreign objects, continuity and insulation, checked the insulation of the motor and drain pump and visually checked the pcb – no obvious faults anywhere.

I plugged it in and ran it, pouring water down the trough and operating the level switch 3 times to check the drain pump was functioning, which it was doing nicely.
After about 8 minutes, it tripped the RCD.

I insulation checked those items again, in the freshly-tripped state of the machine, still with no obvious faults.

I’ve just downloaded the diagnostics system from the manual on Connect’s site, so I’ll be checking the diagnostics and alarms when I go back next week.

I’m suspecting one of the sensors or the pcb, but am willing to be advised otherwise, if anyone knows better.

Is there an expert on these machines out there that could point me in the direction of the suspect component, please?

    Thanks,
    Pigpen.

The original report of prrr > cut out > cool down > restart would point to a toc, maybe in motor windings. Could try changing uF if there is one. Wonder if Mr has (un)/intentionally bypassed toc? Is motor getting hot?

    Thanks, chaps.
I’ve been away for the weekend, hence the dalayed response.

The insualtion resistance figures were all >9999 MOhms, both before and after it tripped the rcd.

I also checked the socket it’s plugged into with my Martindale EZe check Xtra, which took a long time, repeating its self-test 5 or 6 times, before giving me 3 greens at the bottom and a green top left, indicating all is well with the socket. (I’ve never had it repeat the self-test like that before, though, so that was a bit strange)!

The motor didn’t feel excessively hot, as far as I remember, but I’ll be looking at it in more detail, with this in mind, when I go back.
