ParticipantI have been given a Seaward PAT tester, PAT1000s and as a result I am thinking about getting into PAT testing.
I am thinking about offering the service to local letting agents etc
What do you guys think. I know Seaward do a training course on these and to have this tester calibrated/ repaired costs £138 (The unit is worth about £800).

Go for it Toni!
PAT testing can be very lucrative with letting agents as your customer. Mind your charges though, which usually are a whole lot less than regular call-outs, or should be.

ParticipantToni, I used to charge £2.50 per item Pass or fail. On retests after fail another £2.50per item. If they wanted me to repair then I would charge whatever I thought appropriate.
Charges now per item I would guess at £3.50 to a fiver per test P/f and charge what you feel to rectify. Do not forget to charge for cable and fitting the correct fuses, it all adds up.

Toni, have you really got that much spare time on your hands? I did a bit of this some years back and its very time consuming with a lot of paperwork too. You really need software to admin it all and in some respects you may be responible for reminders to test again in the future and if anything goes wrong you will be first in line. Back then, electricians were charging PENCE per items after an initial charge for admin. Not that it is not lucrative, but it just eats up your time.
By the way, I am sure CELTEK: http://www.celtekuk.com/ in Preston charge far less than that quoted for a calibration.
and also, by the way, not wanting to cast any doubts on the integrity of your supplier of this, but i did have a PAT1000 stolen from a van a couple of years ago. My postcode is engraved on the bottom with a soldering iron!

Thanks for the replys on this,
I was given this tester by a friend who used to make the cabinets for a hi-fi manufacturer which went in to liquidation, they left it at his premises about a year ago and he asked me recently if I wanted it. (Checked underneath for postcode 😆 )
You’re right Mark I don’t have enough time at the moment, but I may offer this service to existing customers etc if the price is right. I will send it to be calibrated as you suggsted to Celteck as they are only charging £38.00 + VAT & Carriage.
Once again thanks to all the input on this, it is a great help. I didn’t want to rush straight in without some more infoRegards
