There is no water at all coming from the drain hose.
(After manually draining) I can see the impeller spinning fast if I remove the filter.
Water reaches the pump/filter housing so I conclude that the hose between pump and wash machine is not the issue. I have re-directed the hose to a bucket to eliminate my drains. Not a drop runs out.

The hose runs from pump to a plastic (anti-syphon / pressure relief?) unit accessible with the top of the machine off, and then to my drains/bucket.
This plastic unit has a small tube that goes to the top of the drum. I assume this is to do with pressure relief? Any how there was gunk blocking the outlet for this pipe. Not sure how to clean effectively.
Really I think the next stage is to remove the hoses from this unit so I can check for blockages and also to remove the unit itself and somehow clean it out. However I am not sure how to do this. How does the plastic unit detach from the carcass of the machine? How does the hose detach from the plastic unit?
    All suggestions welcomed!
(I am running a 90 degree wash now for the first time in years – learnt the lesson but fully expect to have to drain this manually.)

you need to find out where the blockage is

    tip

fill machine then stop the programme
select drain programme but do not start
hold the outlet hose about half way with one hand and start programme with the other. if you feel the outlet hose expand then the blockage is somewhere in the end of the hose

dont know how your machine is connected to drain but i have had more than a few fat blockages when people have put fat down the sink

    hope this helps

Thanks electrofix. It is not a problem with my drains. I have the hose in a bucket beside the machine to eliminate that. I have tried to help the pump by sucking on the outlet hose with a wet vac. I have also tried blowing down this but it seems totally blocked.
The test you suggested – the hose does not expand at all.
    Any other ideas?
Especially how do I remove that plastic unit that the final section of drain hose connects to. It is some sort of plastic clip onto the sheet steel back but I don’t want to break it in my enthusiasm and ignorance.

cant tell you how to get part off but it will be clipped in somehow you just have to look carefully and find out how

my next try would be to drop out the pump, take out off the outlet hose and see if there is something blocking the outlet of the pump. most blockages occur at ends or bends
if you are luck its one of the bosch machines where you can access pump from underneath.
unplug machine, tilt machine back to 45 degrees and either get someone to hold it or tilt it back to a wall and look underneath. if you can see pump you will have to remove kickstip at bottom then the bolts holding pump. as you drop it down beware of the wire, it just plugs in then remove hose and check
you can then blow through hoses both way and look for blockages

Dave, gavona has already said that the Air Block container (Part No : 358304) is blocked and wants to know how it is removed?

That unit is prone to getting really gunged up and is surely the problem here I reckon. Normally I replace them but they are possible to remove and clean. That involves wrestling with the latching lugs as they just clip on in manufacturer. Removing that unit is tricky, no easy solution, just patience with a dash of applied logic will always prevail. 8)

    Good luck! 😀

    thats typical of manufacturers
    5 second to fit
30 minutes of swearing to remove 😀

    😀 Thanks Dave, Martin,
I think I am on the way to resolving. I found an old drain hose in the garage and connected to the pump thus bypassing the “Air Block container” (thanks for the name and part number, Martin 🙂 .
With the machine on its side it was actually very easy to remove the latching lugs. Once that was done the Air Block container was easy to remove (machine upright again), and then the hoses. The hoses are easy to clean as my outside hose just fits inside. So now I just have to clean out the unit – loads of gunge.

I would still like to understand the purpose of this Air Block container.
Is it simply to stop any siphon effect with the little tube to the drum having a one way valve to let air in but not out? If so then I guess I don’t need it with the way my machine is plumbed in. I have the hose hooked into an upright drain which connects via U trap to the soil stack about 9 inches away. For siphonage the soil pipe would need to be full of liquid about 2.5 feet above ground level. My downstairs loo would have overflowed well before then and I would have a major insurance claim on my hands anyway!!

While the machine was on its side I did clean out the sump pipe and everything else I could get at – found a bra underwire in two bits – amazed that that had not caused problems.

The purpose of the air block is threefold, firstly it acts as an anti-syphon device toward direct connection to soil pipework (i e. Prevents flowback) .Secondly that same vented system allows air to vent back into the machine and eases water outflow to waste. And finally the potential nuisance of ‘suds lock’ is eliminated once air bubbles are vented back into the tub.
