I have heard that if a item of equipment is PAT Tested then that PAT test is only valid for that item of equipment on that specific site ? i.e if that item of equipment is moved to another site the PAT test is not valid ? is this true ? and if so what about businesses that use items of equipment that are used at different locations and need to be PAT tested ?

Depends on the ‘Class’ of equipment and its location determine its frequency of testing/inspection. Moving portable appliances from location to location does not effect its PAT certification. Moving (for example) a dishwasher from one location to another will not affect its PAT certification unless the ownership of that appliance changes with it. If so the new owner may well be required to have it tested.

Thanks Martin, I am sure that I read here somewhere that someone was saying that any appliance PAT tested was only valid for the installation where it was installed. Of course I am not doubting what you have said Martin but was really trying to locate that earlier post

You could use a laptop as an example; it needs to be tested but is by nature moved around. Because of the fact that you are subjecting it to more risk than say a desktop computer, you may wish to have it tested every 6 months. Part of a PAT is a visual inspection and it would be a good Idea to do this every time it is plugged in. The HSE don’t set down frequency guidelines as nature of use has a bearing on risk. It is the owners responsibility to determine a reasonable period between tests.
