Hi,
I’m hoping that I’ve put this in the right place, and that someone can help me making a decision.
I’m in the market for a new washer and dryer (separates only, none of this combo stuff) and am hoping to come to a decision shortly. The current shortlist is the AEG 74800 vs the Miele W526. I was wondering if there’s any reason to purchase one over the other, particularly as the costs are so similar when including a 5 year warranty on the AEG. I need a machine that will be reliable, is fairly flexible and has excellent rinsing. Is either one better than the other?
Also, for dryers, I’m looking at the AEG 57800, which appears to be a new variant of the Which? recommended machine. Would this be a good choice?

The Miele would be the better choice in my opinion.
The AEG is basically a Zanussi in disguise with more control options, a good machine none the less but the Miele wins in my book.

Also… this might seem like a silly question, but any idea actually how deep the 74800 is? The AEG website doesn’t seem to agree with itself, or with other sites… it’s very confusing!
Any other thoughts?
Ah, another random question. Can you program extra rinses/higher water level into both machines?

The AEG Dryer is 580mm deep 🙂
The AEG washing machine cannot be adjusted but all models of Meile have adjustable options you require 😉
If you can afford Meile….its a better machine overall!

I’ve read the specs, and I see both the AEG and Miele have extra rinses, what is the difference? I’m a little confused about it.
Also, if AEG and Zanussi are the same machines, is there any reason to buy the AEG over the Zanussi – other than deciding which one looks nicer? Both are reliable makes aren’t they?
Having had a poke at the machines in stores, it would appear that the AEG and Zanussi are identical. The Mieles are certainly nice machines, but I think they’d maybe be pushing the budget a little too much…

Very little I doubt as far as water usage and economy go, why the concern over extra rinses may I ask ?

Yep, both virtually identical. The AEG may have extra functions for the consumer, possibly more economical (see the energy label).

Nope, not at all. Miele manufacture all their own components, they also guarantee the appliance for 10 years in many cases.
I’m not biased by the way as I have nothing to gain at all from recommending Miele, mainly because they don’t go wrong too often 😉

That’s an easy one to answer – a couple of members of the family have sensitive skin, and we live in an area with very soft water. Even machines that rinse well on a normal cycle need an extra rinse or two round here!

Ah… right. I don’t think there’s an awful lot in it, really. Apart from AEG cheating slightly on the wash cycle they use for testing and only having it do two rinses (or so I found out when a salesman pointed it out in the instruction book!)…

🙂I’d like a Miele, but I really meant stretching *my* budget a little – especially for the 10 year guarantee ones. I’ll be having another look over the weekend and hopefully deciding and purchasing. Any last bits of help would be appreciated!

I’ve been watching this thread and I had thought that this may be the case here. Usually allergies or eczema will give rise to problems like this and, frankly, quite often the only reason that a customer will care about such things unless some facts are pointed out.
Can you tell me what detergent and softener (if any) that you use as, I’m sure you are aware, that if members of the family suffer from sensitive skin problems then you should only be using a non-bio powder. Both Ariel and Persil offer such an alternative, very few others do and none that I know of offer anywhere near the same results in cleaning, balanced with care for skin problems or allergies? I may be able to offer further advice, or get it, given more detail.
The choice of machine comes down to what you think is sufficient for your needs and, Dave is quite correct in saying that the Meile is the better appliance all round IMO as well. It will last longer, take more punishment and probably perform better than the AEG. Yes, it is more expensive but then you don’t get a Mercedes for Mini money either. Extra rinses are not the only thing to consider either, how much detergent do you need? How soft is the water in the area as that determines the dosage of detergent which is a priority factor given the information? Have you tested the water for hardness, or can you get that information?
In the situation you’re in I would look carefully at all the factors in the equation before leaping in.

I don’t use anything but non-bio detergent. Exactly which one I use depends on whether there’s any special offers on, but generally it is Persil (occasionally Ariel/Fairy). I don’t care for Surcare, as I feel it doesn’t clean well.
The water is in the ‘very soft’ category (SE Scotland), but I don’t remember what the exact hardness is. I generally use as little detergent as I can to get things clean – and prefer powder to tablets or liquid. As for softener, I don’t generally use that either, just occasionally for things like sofa covers or curtains really.
Having said all that, is there anything else I really ought to consider? As you might have guessed, I’m not fond of making decisions when there seems to be so little between the options!
In that case J, other than looking at the doseage your using, you’re doing pretty much all that you can do to my knowledge.

I’m sure that the machine is long bought by now 😀
But just a comment that I have read that if the clothes are rinsed well enough then actually using biological detergent if you’ve got sensitive skin would be ok. The Miele is supposed to have suprior rinsing power.
I don’t have a Miele (yet!) but have the most expensive Bosch (wish I’d bought a Miele but only the Bosch or Indesit would fit in the space! can’t wait till I move!). I find that by running clothes through another wash I can tolerate biological detergent. Whether I use non bio or bio, I am always shocked at how much detergent I see floating around in the second wash.
I hope you did get the Miele in the end. I am trying to hurry up my moving house so that I can take advantage of their current 5 and 10 year free parts and labour guarantee offer.
