Hi. I’ve been drafted in to try and fix my mother-in-law’s Ariston FV271 built in electric cooker. It’ll be about 18 years old, but was cooking away quite nicely the other night when it “made an awful noise, then went bang”. Fortunately the fish it was cooking at the time was done to a turn, but the outside of the cooker unit was very hot.

The fuse in the mains plug had blown so changing this makes the clock work, but there’s no other functionality at all. The clock is set to ‘manual’ but there’s no light, no fan and no action from cooker or grill.

Could it be as straightforward as a fuse within the cooker itself, thermostat or element (element was replaced in 1997), or is it time to buy a new oven?

I’d be most grateful for any thoughts or suggestions – seems a bit daft to call an engineer out if it’s broken beyond repair. Thanks.

Thanks Dave, will check that out. Mother-in-Law has eye on a new cooker just in case!
