Does anyone have a set of instructions for replacing the drum bearings of an ancient Hoover Logic 1200 A3628 model? I am trying to work out if it is worth the effort of doing it. By the looks of things steps are …
1. unplug power, disconnect water
2. remove rear cover, and upper part too, remove belt
3. disconnect several electical connectors from the back
4. undo the 10mm nuts from the back of the main lump. So far this seems about 10 minutes work… famous last words presumably?
5. Then what? Does it just fall apart & the bearings are there & obvious?
Also, I see I can get a bearing kit on here for a mere £16 – but will I need anything else & if so is it still available?Or should I gracefully retire it & buy a new one? If so it seems Bosch are as good as any- but which model… 24165/28165 seem the cheaper… any recomendations welcome. Ideally I’d like something that will last as long and work as well as the Hoover has done.

What condition is the back of the drum in, does it appear shiny and clean or is it full of fluffy white marks.
It wouldn’t do any harm to try and strip it down first before you order anything. you would also have to replace the black rubber seal that goes around the drum backplate, not sure if they are still available.
Once you have the inner drum and backplate out then you have to remove the drum pulley and carefully knock out the inner drum and shaft.
Then you have to try and remove the old bearings from the backplate, a big lump hammer and a heavy chisel or drift is required.
Are you in a hard or a soft water area?
If you can post a decent,close up picture of the drum backplate we can usually see if it is worth trying to change the bearings.

Thanks for the reply. I can’t manage a pic of the drum backplate at this minute as it is running a programme, if a tad noisily! However, when I looked at it earlier there were clear signs of slight water leakage from a drain hole just by what is presumably the bearing housing, though it looked more like dark staining & a single drop of water, not fluffy white corrosion. Is that sufficient info or should I go for a photo tomorrow too?
It is a very hard water area here. The rest of the job sounds pretty straightforward/ a decent challenge!

Yes indeed, walk in the park in fact. All you’ll need is the bearing kit and a new tub backplate gasket (all still very much available, and cheap) Have fun! 😀

last did one approx 18 years ago, definatley change tank seal as will leak otherwise-i found out the hard way!

In this instance thats a good thing, the water round here is very soft and most of the backplates of the few remaining Hotpoint/Hoover machines with alloy backplates in this area will be very badly corroded by now. 😥

So far so good then. 18 years ago sounds about right, I bought it secondhand in 1995 so can’t complain!
Anyone know a spares stockist that has both the bearing kit and the tub gasket? The gasket, 5031-6814-2810-9 , is in stock only at 4hoover, Currys and buyspares sites (they all seem to be the same site actually, tho buyspares post is cheaper) but the bearing only seems to be on ebay (genuine) or on here (pattern).

Have you tried to get the old bearings out first. You REALLY should do this before ordering anything. :lesson:
You may find the inner drum shaft badly damaged or the ceramic face seal from the drum support adrift or cracked.

A progress update- I have had a little dismantling session this evening, the drum is out though still attached to the backplate (pulley is off) – the shaft does just knock through the bearings, doesn’t it? However, the backplate does look badly corroded around the edge where the seal fits with an approx 2-3mm thick layer of white alloy corrosion; I suspect a good wire brushing will bring up all sorts of nasties. I’ll give that a try tomorrow but fear that the end is nigh (anyone need any spare parts if so?).
Top replacement options appear to be Bosch WAE24166GB or WAE24165GB as I gather these are pretty repairable/ long lived (they are of course expected to last at least as long as the Hoover); any opinions/suggestions welcomed.

Slight ‘pitting’ of the alloy after cleaning is commonplace and will reseal OK with a new foam tub gasket. However if part of the alloy ridge has corroded completely through you have a problem as a replacement backplate now obsolete. 🙁

That is totally ‘cream crackered’ 🙁
There appear to be several places on the backplate close to the bearing that have already corroded through.
I have circled a couple of them in this picture.
If you push a screwdriver into them I’m sure you will go right through.

Just tried that, and surprisingly I couldn’t make a hole. One other spot does look really dodgy though, the alloy has gone black there too whereas everywhere else you can dig down to silver! Also, the state of the outer edge seal area is way beyond the light pitting stage, the chance of getting a watertight seal there looks zilch.
So, Bosch WAE24060, 24165, 24166 or 28168? Can get any of these for about £300. Any suggestions welcomed- it’ll have to cope with a regular diet of filthy motocross gear which, paddock rumour suggests, is best cleaned by an older style machine that uses lots of water. Also not too fussed about capacity as it is rarely filled.

Yep! Logic says that your Hoover Logic is a scrapper for sure. 🙁
These days the Bosch WAE28367GB is the way forward, decent load size, decent spin, many options and around £375. Barter the bloke at your local Comet store with a wad of cash and he’ll knock a few more quid off for you, bringing down closer toward your £300 ideal price tag.

Many thanks. That 28367 is a bit outside my budget, especially in the local stockists. One independent firm does have a WAE24367 on offer for £337- would that be a better bet than any of the WAE24060, 24165, 24166 or 28168 for £300? In particular, any idea which models have a sealed drum with non-replaceable bearings? I do rate longevity/ repairability highly, as you may have already guessed! Indeed I may stretch the budget a bit to accommodate that even.
