ParticipantHello, can anyone help me?
The washing machine will work fine with no load.
But with a normal load it starts off ok, then seems to try to spin, the machine jumps six inches forward and stops. It’ll keep on doing this all day.
The detergent is used, the conditioner isn’t.
Any help appreciated!

Un-plug it from the mains then take a close look at the motor. 😉

Knackered motor? Could I scrape the carbon out of the armature or is it best to just replace?
Mike.

Usually Mike all you need do is replace the carbon brushes after first cleaning the armature and removing best part of all carbon dust. 😉

Thanks very much. Brushes went a couple of years ago, although that caused a different problem. I’ll whip them out and have a look.

Just to clarify, the drum lurches violently when it tries to spin, so much so that it unhooked one of the springs that suspends the drum.
Is this down to the motor (brushes?) or is there another problem?

Check the motor tacho generator then. 😉

Thanks again. Just checked the brushes, both fine, about an inch left.
But Tacho Generator? Is that the ring around the magnet opposite the pulley end? If so how do I test it? I have a multimeter but what/ where do I measure?
Just done a dry run, it spins up fine when empty, just fails with clothes in it (so not much good!) . Odd.

Last update today; tried a wash cycle, it goes through, then tries to spin, does a jump and stops. It’ll then repeat this for hours. So I turned it off, selected spin and it drained off and spun up to (what seemed like) the full 1400 rpm no problem and stopped normally.
I’m stuck. Does this mean the motor is ok? Not sure that’s good or bad…

Back to square one then I guess. Suspicion is still directed toward the motor in that it’s either a dodgy connection to it or the armature is worn and has an insulation problem or the tacho generator is at fault in some way.
