    Hi,

First posting and hoping someone can help me…

My daughter’s washing machine, a Hotpoint First Edition WMA22 is giving problems.

It fills with water and eventually empties itself – but the drum does not revolve – neither to wash or spin. The drum appears to just ‘kick’ occasionally. By that I mean it seems as if it’s just beginning to turn but then stops. This might have led me to suspect the motor brushes but I replaced these in February this year. Incidentally I got these from UK Whitegoods (item 1603910) and I have to assume they would last more than a few months. I also replaced the control board in November 2010 with a rebuilt one from EMW electronics. EMW suggested I return the board for checking. They subsequently sent me a text to the effect that the motor drivers were damaged and needed replacing. They also suggested that the motor might require replacing.

Motor operation had been intermittent before I replaced the brushes and I’m wondering if this might have harassed the motor drivers which have eventually given up. This being the case I’m hoping the motor might now be OK, the brushes having been replaced. Incidentally I also cleaned the commutator. If I have to have the control board serviced ‘and’ the motor replaced it could possibly be an uneconomic repair…

Any advice and/or comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    John

A new motor to PCB wiring harness may be needed.
    Part number C00201532.

The FHP motor is normally quite reliable but if a new harness doesn’t clear the fault that would point to a faulty motor.

I will just add that some motor triac faults do not show up on EMW’s tests but that is an extreme rarity although I had such a problem recently.

    iadom – thanks for that.

I did read somewhere that this harness may be damaged if it touches the drum or any moving part related to it.

As I assume that all the harness does is carry power to the motor I cannot see any reason for this harness to have been modified during production. If I visually check this harness for any damage that would presumably be OK?

    Appreciate your input.

Apart from chafing on the lower concrete balance weight the wiring harness can break close to the motor plug, breaks here are not always obvious, a gentle tug on the wires may reveal a break.

Not easy to repair the wiring breaks at the motor plug, much better to replace the harness if it is broken there.
