    Afternoon all

We have a Bosch exxcel dishwaser – serial SGS45E02GB/45.

On Tuesday evening at about 7 p.m. the wife put the washer on and we’re fairly sure that it finished its cycle. A bit later that evening – about 22:30 there was a bang – sounded like a balloon popping – only louder. Didn’t actually think that much about it as we did have some balloons in the other room so assumed that one of those had popped.

Yesterday morning, loaded up the washer again and turned it on but no power. Replaced the 13 amp fuse (with the one from the kettle), plugged in and there was this bang/pop noise – just the one bang. There was also a smell – both from my bottom as well as an electrical smell from the back of the machine. It maybe took me 10 or 20 seconds to turn the power off but, on investigation, the fuse did not blow this time.

This morning, after spending hours teaching the kids how to dry dishes (they don’t know they’re born), I had a look at the machine. The back where the power cable goes in is black. The tip of the live prong on the plug that goes into the wall is black. I’ve taken the side off the machine and there are soot marks inside the machine around the power cable entry point.

Looking at previous posts, it seems that this may be caused by a suppressor or capacitor blowing (is that the same part)?

Can anyone advise me whether this is likely to be the case and then I’ll look for a part number. Also – more importantly – what causes this? Is it worth swapping over the part or did it fail due to an underlying issue? Also, if it was the capacitor – would this bang twice?

Not sure how old the washer is – we picked it up off eBay but it has been working well since bought about five months ago.

    Many thanks in anticipation

Yes a new suppressor will cure though you will need to clean up the burn marks with WD40 before installing.

    Many thanks for the answer.

This looks like the part even though our model number isn’t listed

Do these parts blow for a reason? Does the fact that it has blown mean that there is probably a short somewhere?

Just a note to advise that the suppressor arrived from UKWG yesterday. Cleaned up the backplate, plugged the new suppressor in and then plugged in and turned on the dishwasher. Touch wood, there have been no bangs since and we are delighted to have a tidy kitchen again.

Many thanks to the forum for the advice. It is much appreciated – less that £20 to have a working dishwasher rather than an expensive repair bill or a new dishwasher.

    Cheers

    Gordon
