KeymasterA few years ago we had an ariston engineer who worked the sheffield area who started at 6am. His customers loved it, when they phoned in for service he was constantly in demand as early as possible. Nowadays the guys working the London codes probably start at 5am for obvious reasons.
So what about us, how do you guys see the future call booking and are you willing/ able to offer an early call?At present I have two engineers who are at their 1st calls by 0730 without fail. I also know that some of my customers would let us in even earlier, 6am would not be a problem to some.
Question is how do we reward an engineer for his efforts, 3 jobs done by 0830 ect, and with 10 jobs that day he would not be pleased with an after 1pm call. It changes the emphasis away from afternoon calls and for part of the day gets the engineer out of the traffic at peak times.
So is there an opening for say 6am to 2pm as a working day in this industry. Although there would not be extra payment from an insurance job(as the insurance was not sold with that service level attached to it) there might be a case for manufacturer guarantee work carrying a premium. Who knows in the future even the insurance job could be sold with that level of service and the call rate should reflect that.

It is a great idea for those guys that can cope with an early start/early finish. I know of 2 engineers that are doing just that and have been for years now with great success.
Regarding the after 1pm/after 2/after 4 senario, for those guys it does not enter the frame as those customers that are normally out between 08:30 and After 1 etc, are in fact at home at 06:30, so one problem is cancelled by the other and thus never crops up for them 🙂

As Richard points out I’m more of a “wee small hours” kinda vampire. 😉
That said I’d certainly put it to the guys if there was some renumeration there for it. Whether they’d want to go down that route is their call really and I have to bear in mind the other work that we do for the likes of builders and retailers, but in principal I see no reason why it can’t be looked at.

Participant10am ’til I finish does for me. I did early starts for a while, but 8-9am didn’t work because of the school run, so that was a wasted hour and spoiled the flow of the day. Doing it the OTHER way round has exactly the same customer benefits with the advantage that AFTER work, they’re too knackered to argue about the bill!

We used to have an engineer that enjoyed an early start at around 06.30, and many customers did take the early option as they could get the repair done before going to work.
These days we tend to stick to the 08.30 – 17.30 routine and have few problems with access generally, mainly due the average age of the Devon customer, many of who are retired or semi-retired.
I guess it’s a case of what works best for you in whatever area you are in.
Dave.
