On the last few uses my machine bangs like crazy when it goes into spin. It make no noise at all empty or with a small load so I think that rules out the bearings. I have assumed it is one or both of the Housing susspension rods. Is that a fair conclusion? I’ve bought 2 spares but I now think it is a bigger job than I thought to replace them. Am I wasting my time, doing the wrong thing? If not, how do I go about getting the old struts out?

You can test the suspension units by first of all removing the mains plug and then pressing down sharply on the top of the drum, just like shock absorbers on a car they should not bounce, The drum should press down and return to its original position smoothly without any bouncing.

It is not an easy job to replace the suspension units and if the steel rods are clean and in good condition you can leave them in place and just replace the lower shock absorbers.

I did a pair only yesterday, it took me about 20 minutes, but thats with the benefit of over 40 years experience. 😉

It can be done by removing the front panel, from there on in it is just a physically hard wrestling match with the machine tilted back against a wall or cupboard. You can lift them and the drum just far enough to allow the old suspension units to be pulled out of the bottom of the machine, only do one side at once though.

It is a job that can leave you with a few scars so if you don’t fancy it then try our ‘find an engineer’ facility, we may have someone who can help.

It is also possible that the inner drum support may have snapped.

No need to take the front panel off really, just lie the machine on each side and do one at once, undo the 13mm nut press the shocker into the machine with a big screwdriver and it will come out through the base quite easily.
