ParticipantConedenser Dryer started smoking heavily, no electronic errors and drum moving OK, clothes drying no problems. Plate at back was too hot to touch. Allowed to cool completely and disconnected from mains.
On removal of covers on ack found the heating element had black/charred fluff and dust on the top. When touched to inspect it broke and seemed very brittle. Should they be like this? Almost seemed to be made of paper in the middle.
Unit is 3years old (exactly!) and otherwise OK
Is this a fairly simple repait for a competent DIYer or should I take it down to the local repairer (trustworthy) and how much should this cost?
Many thanks.

It would not be wise for any DIYer to interfere with electrical items on an appliance. Notwithstanding this, the job you suggest would require some dismantling of the machine…
I suggest you search at the following link to find an approved engineer to whom you can consider trustworthy. FIND AN ENGINEER

Why not?
IMHO With some common sense, a bit of a grounding (pardon the pun) in electronics and being mindful of safety precautions, what’s the issue.
I’m a competent DIY’er and have changed many an element, thermostat, circuit board, motor brush etc in appliances without issue, saving myself a bob or two in the process.September 26, 2011 at 12:45 pm #359896Allsorts

The fact that the machine requires partial dismantling in order to connect the element and apply the other procedures that are required to take place to prevent further problems or fire from the machine is a good indicator that this job should be done only by someone who is competant in all three fields.

Many thanks for the replies, I have a quote of 80 pounds if it is just the element.

That is a very fair price ‘if’ it includes labour.
