Whirlpool adg722 dishwasher starts and stops and starts

Whirlpool adg722 dishwasher. 65degree wash starts ok. Does pre-rinse then stops completely during draining stage with water still in it. All lights are off – no flashing. After a while it all starts going again – soap tablet is dispensed and starts washing. Then after a while it goes off again. All lights are off – no flashing, water still in bottom. After a while it all starts going again. This can continue for hours until I catch it whilst it is going and I am then able to press and hold the start button to reset it – it then drains completely. During the stages when the lights are off and it’s not doing anything I’m not able to do a thing with it – pressing and holding start button does nothing. Any ideas?
