I have done these hundreds of times, often without removing the front panel. 😉
However for a first timer that may be the best option and it is quite easy.
Remove top.
Remove timer knob by releasing the screw that you can get to through the hole in the top of the facia backplate.
Soap drawer out, remove all the screws holding facia and carefully lift off the facia, it may be a bit brittle with age so handle gently.
Release the door seal outer retaining strips, two screws in each.
Release door lock, two screws in latchplate and two into doorlock itself.
Three screws along the top of front panel, three along the bottom and you are in.
